There's a fan theory that since we saw Dio using Jonathan's Hermit purple without breaking his camera, it means that Joseph doesn't actually need to break his cameras in order to take spirit photos and he's just hitting them too hard and hasn't attempted to take spirit photographs without force. the other possibilities are that Dio's hermit purple is more efficient, or his camera is more durable.

The World's avatar can move and process things as quickly as Star Platinum, so 5 seconds is worth a lot more than for him it would be for a regular person. If DIO can get within 10 metres of his enemy, then he wins any fight unless his enemy also has chronokinetic powers.
