Homemade Disco Ball

You can either make a polystyrene or aluminium disco ball at home using these steps. This is the easiest DIY to get that party theme in your own home.

What you need

Large polystyrene ball or a child’s hard rubber ball.

Either squares of mirror which are available from craft stores or pieces of a broken or smashed mirror (not suitable for young children)

Aluminium foil cut into small squares is a great alternative.

Instructions

Glass Ball

• Start by preparing your ball. If you are using a rubber ball you may need to coat it with a spray paint to give it a suitable background color.
• Using a silicon glass glue (available from hardware or craft stores) apply the square pieces of mirror around the ball in neat lines until the ball is covered.
• If you are using broken mirrors, you may need to smash the pieces into smaller shapes. Then as neatly as possible apply them to the ball in lines. It may take several hours to dry, so it may be easier to work on a section at a time.
• If you are using the rubber ball you could try super glue or hot melt. To hang your ball make a U shape out of wire and push it into the poly ball and secure with glue, or glue on some hanging cord to the rubber ball.

Aluminium ball

• If you are using a rubber ball you may need to coat it with a spray paint to give it a suitable background color.
• Take your foil and cut it into small squares, about 1 inch by 1 inch unless you are using a smaller ball then make your squares a suitable size.
• Using white craft or wood glue, apply the square pieces of foil around the ball in neat lines until the ball is covered. Leave a small gap between each piece (this gives the effect of a mirror piece).
• To hang your ball make a U shape out of wire and push it into the poly ball and secure with glue, or glue on some hanging cord to the rubber ball.
