Tie an Overhand Knot in the end and then tie another Overhand Knot. Form a ring by passing the end through the second Overhand and tighten to make the Honda Knot. Then, pull a bight of the rope through the ring to form the Lariat.

Origin: The Honda Knot and Lariat were described by Ashley several times (ABOK #227, p 43, #1024, p 187, and #1127, p 205). He surmises that “aborigines” used the knot on several continents and goes on to say that Mexican and American cowboys have adopted it for their lariats and call it the Honda Knot.

Tying it: For the Honda Knot Animation relatively flexible rope was used and it was convenient to invert the ring and pull a bight through to complete the Lariat. In practice a more rigid rope is employed to keep the ring of the Honda Knot open and sliding easily. Then the long end is just pulled through the ring to create the Lariat.

Lasso:. A Lasso is called variously a lariat, riata, or reata (all from Castilian: la reata ‐ re-tied rope). It is designed as a restraint to be thrown around a target and tightened when pulled. Cowboys usually just call it a “rope”, and refer to “roping”. To most cowboys the term “lasso” immediately identifies the speaker as a layman.

Bowline Knot - secure loop in the end of a piece of ropeThe Bowline Knot makes a reasonably secure loop in the end of a piece of rope. It has many uses such as to fasten a mooring line to a ring or a post. Clove Hitch - Rope End Method - used for stage scenery or mooring buoyThe Clove Hitch can be used for a temporary hold, e.g., stage scenery or mooring buoy. It does have two giant faults: it slips and can also bind. It should be deeply distrusted when used by itself. Alpine Butterfly Loop - Secure loop in middle of a ropeThe Alpine Butterfly Loop provides a secure loop in the middle of a piece of rope. Load can be safely applied: from the loop to either end of the rope; between the two ends with the loop hanging free; or to the loop with the load spread between the two ends. Figure 8 Knot - stopper knotThe Figure 8 Knot provides a quick and convenient stopper knot to prevent a line sliding out of sight, e.g., up inside the mast. Double Fisherman's Bend Knot - joins two ropesThe Double Fisherman's or Grapevine Bend consists of two strangle knots (like double overhand knots) each tied round the other standing end. Square Knot - Simple way to join two ropesThe Square Knot (Reef Knot) is usually learned when we tie our shoelaces. Admittedly it is usually a bow that we tie - but the underlying knot is a Square Knot. Horse & Farm KnotsHorse & Farm KnotsEnd Loop KnotsEnd Loop Knots
