What is Horny Goat Weed?

You may have seen horny goat weed for sale as aherbal viagrasupplement. It is on offer in various health shops and many online pharmacies. Herbologists and gardening enthusiasts know it under the name epimedium or barrenwort. Some people believe that it is an effective erectile dysfunction treatment and there have been rumours that it helps women to reduce symptoms during the menopause.

Does it Work?

According to a legend, horny goat weed was given its unusual name when a goatherd observed his goats getting sexually aroused after feeding on it. While that certainly sounds promising, the story should be taken with a pinch of salt. Lab tests have confirmed that horny goat weed does indeed contain a chemical which could, in theory, act like Viagra. However, it only contains a very small amount of it. This means that you would have to eat an incredibly large amount of it to feel any effect, which would be extremely impractical, very expensive and potentially dangerous.

Does it Have Side Effects?

Many people assume that herbal ED remedies can’t cause side effects. With horny goat weed, that doesn’t hold true. It has been found to cause stomach upsets, dry mouth and nose bleeds in some people. Patients who are taking any medication for high blood pressure should not take it, as it can cause their blood pressure level to get too low.

The herb interferes with a number of other medications too, such as antidepressants, blood thinners, medications for thyroid problems and antiretroviral treatments. In short: you should always discuss herbal supplements with your doctor, and if you suffer from any medical condition or are taking any medication, it’s even more important that you speak to your doctor first.

Getting treated

The bottom line is: leave it to the goats. It makes a better addition to your garden than your bedroom.
