What Are Lumens?

A Lumen is a measure of the total amount of light emitted from a source.

What Does 4000 Lumens Mean?

4000 lumens means the light has the intensity of 4000 lumens of light.

When you are looking for how bright a certain light bulb will be, whether it is LED, CFL or incandescent – the number of lumens is what you need to use as your comparison.

How Bright is 4000 Lumens?

Lumens is the unit measurement of brightness, with 1 lumen equalling the brightness of 1 candle, so 4000 lumens has the brightness of 4000 candles.

4000 lumens is a good level of light for LED, CFL or incandescent lighting. It’s suitable for recessed lighting, downlighting, up lighting and within pendants.

Outdoors

The brightness of 4000 lumens is good for most outdoor applications. It is bright enough to light up a large area and can be used for security purposes.

Flashlight

The brightness of an 4000 lumen flashlight is extremely good in it’s class and will provide a far reaching beam of light as all the illumination is focused and directed forwards and efficiently by it’s design. The wider the beam of a flashlight the less intense the light will be and therefore feel less bright. The narrower the beam the more concentrated the light will be.

Torch

The brightness of an 4000 lumen torch (UK for flashlight) is the power of light of 4000 candles. This level is regarded as a very bright level of torch suitable for most outdoor tasks. The throw of light can be up to a 100m distance.

How Much Light is 4000 Lumens?

To compare how much light you get with different lumens levels, imagine a one by one meter room. If the room has an incandescent bulb which emits 4000 lumens then it can illuminate that area to roughly 400 lux (depending on the reflectivity of surfaces in the room).

How Bright is 4000 Lumens LED?

LED light is directional and very efficiently delivers light compared to other lighting sources. This amount of light is distributed with minimal wastage and creates a brighter intensity on a surface than 4000 lumens from other technologies.

LED light when cool white color temperatures of 4000K to 6500K will feel brighter when compared to the warmer yellowish tones of warm white when using the same lumen output.

Is 4000 Lumens Bright Enough?

The number of lumens you need for a room depends on the size of the room and the level of brightness you want.

  • For a small room, such as a bathroom, you will only need around 300 lumens.
  • For a medium-sized room, such as a kitchen or living room, you will need around 800 lumens.
  • For a large room, such as a dining room or office, you will need around 1500 lumens.

How Much Area Does 4000 Lumens Cover?

The answer depends on how hight the light source is from the floor, how wide the light spreads and the type of lighting product delivering this light. However, in general terms the foot-candle or lux requirement of the activity in the space will determine if there is sufficient light in that room.

For example, a living room that is 100 square feet needs between 1,000 and 2,000 lumens of light. A dining room that is also 100 square feet needs between 3,000 and 4,000 lumens of light.

How Far Will 4000 Lumens Shine?

The distance light will travel depends on how the light is being delivered, particularly the beam angle of the light and it’s intensity. The more compactly the lumens are delivered the further the distance will be.

For example, a flashlight with 4000 lumens with a tight beam angle has a peak illumination of 240,000 candela delivering light up to around 980 metres at no less than 0.25 lux. (using throw = SQRT (candela * 4)

Is 4000 Lumens Bright Enough As the Main Ceiling Light?

For an average sized room in your home, a main ceiling light with approximately 4000 lumen output is bright but there are some considerations to be aware of.

  1. A ceiling light that takes 4 qty LED bulbs, use the 806lm A lamps to give you approx 3200lm but not all of that light is useful.
  2. Some of the light output is lost inside the lighting product itself. The diffuser of the product will hinder the efficacy of delivering the light, maybe 25% to 30% of the brightness is lost. So 4000lm may in fact in reality become 75% of that, possibly even 3000lm.
  3. When a ceiling light distributes the light, the light that makes it out of the product is then spread very widely, so the feeling of brightness from this output is reduced even further.

Is 4000 Lumens Bright Enough for Reading?

For reading purposes a light of around 4000 lumens directly onto a page would be too bright. However this will depend on how far away the light source is from the book. If in a ceiling light then this level would be acceptable for reading as long as the reader does not have any shadowing over the pages from adjacent objects or if they are facing away from the light source.

4000 Lumens Lighting Products

Flashlight

A 4000 lumen torch is very bright for outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, as well as for general home use as a whole back yard can easily be lit from this single source of light.

Camping Lantern

When you look for a camping lantern the brightness of 4000 lumens is very effective and a good output for outdoor lanterns. This level will lluminate your surroundings with the caviat that it will cause some glare which can be common from the high lumen lanterns.

Security Light

An 4000 lumen security light is bright and will easily illuminate the areas around your home. It’s a good option for lighting up where you need it most, with additional features such as motion sensors available to choose from depending on how much control or automation you require. It’s a good light output for an LED security floodlight with a coverage of at least 30 ft.

LED Bulb

The brightness of an 4000 lumen LED bulb is typically 27W and is very bright. It is equivalent to 250 watt of incandescant light and has a corn on the cob LED form factor, so it must be shrouded within a product to hide the source for aesthetic and glare reasons.

Projector

A 4000 lumen projector is designed for large venues and events so that the image can be seen even in well-lit rooms. This output will give you a clear and bright picture that is perfect for presentations, movies, and gaming. It’s a good option for those who need a high-quality image without sacrificing brightness.

Car Headlight

The brightness of a headlight is determined by the lumen output and the distance at which it is measured. A 4000 lumen headlight will be bright at all distances, however, it may cause some glare for oncoming traffic. It’s a good option for those who need a bright light but don’t want to sacrifice safety.

How Bright is 4000 Lumens in Watts?

When considering 4000 lumens to watts you need to consider the type of bulb or light source. The efficiency of the technology determines the power used to create the same amount of light:

  • For an incandescent light bulb, 4000 lumens would be around 250-300 watts.
  • For a CFL light bulb, it would be around 70 watts.
  • And for an LED light bulb, it would be around 27 watts.

3000 Lumens vs 4000 Lumens

What is the difference when looking at the brightness of 3000 lumens vs 4000 lumens? It is important to consider the purpose of the light to determine the best output for your use.

  • For example, a 4000 lumen light may be too bright for reading, but it would be perfect for outdoor activities or security purposes.
  • The size of the room you are trying to light will also play a role in determining the best output for your needs. They may be similar outputs but the extra 33% will make a real difference in a bathroom but not in an open plan lounge area.
  • In general, a 4000 lumen light is brighter than a 3000 lumen light. However, it is important to consider the specific purpose of the light before making a decision on which one to choose to get the most out of it. When concentrated over a particular area, like a kitchen island counter top, this task lighting may become too bright with the higher output.
  • The color of the walls, floors and ceilings in the room can also affect how bright the light appears. For example, a white ceiling will reflect more light than a dark colored one, making the room appear brighter overall.
  • To sum it up, 4000 lumens is significantly brighter than 3000 lumens. If you need task lighting in your kitchen or bathroom, this higher output may be just what you need. But, if you’re looking for general lighting in a living room or bedroom, 2000 – 3000 lumens may be just right. It all comes down to your specific needs and how much light you want in the space.

4000 Lumen Conversions

Useful comparative measurements often asked:

Lux

Lux can only be measured by knowing the distance and the area the lumens have to travel to.

Foot-candle

4000 lumens is 4000 candles.

Kelvin

A degree of kelvin is the unit of measurement for color temperature, therefore there is no direct comparison with kelvin to lumen. However, an impression of brightness will increase with a high degree of kelvin as the light seems colder and brighter to the viewer.

Candela

Lumens and Candela. Lumens is the total amount of light from a fixture. Candela is how much of that light from a fixture shines in one direction. So 4000 lm would be less than 4000 candela with the candela only quantified if the angle of beam width is known.
