How Did Darth Maul Survive? & 9 Other Questions About The Sith ...

The Saberstaff-wielding Sith Assassin, Darth Maul, is one of the most confusing and contradicting characters in the Star Wars Universe. Many instances of his story are altered or retconned, and seemingly brought back into canon between the comics, TV shows, and movies. After he was plunged into the reactor pit, split in two by Obi-Wan, Maul began to lose his memory. He managed to carry himself into a container that was on a transport to Lotho Minor. His survival came from eating large insects and destroying a large machine that a nearby Anacondan was cowering away from.

Defeating it and saving the Anacondan named Morley, Maul was carried to a cave where he eventually awoke and used an arachnid-like cybernetic apparatus to replace his lower half. He'd survive this way for twelve years, with Moley being a lackey of sorts.

During his path of revenge, Maul and Opress found and killed Obi-Wan's former partner, Duchess Satine Kryze. It was after this that Sidious caught on to his survival and concocted a plan with Dooku. The two captured Maul, killing Opress, and waited for Maul to escape. This game of cat and mouse ended up with Maul using his forces to seize General Grievous and Count Dooku.

Maul gave Dooku to Mother Talzin in order for her to regain her full power, but Dooku's real plan had already been put in motion. Grievous escaped with the knowledge of her location and went straight back to Sidious. Taizin would die, and Maul supposedly died sometime after.

Vader Killing Darth Maul

Years after his offscreen Legends' death, Maul was brought back to life by the Prophets of the Dark Side. Darth Vader was believed to not be a good fit for a Sith Lord because of his Jedi training, making Maul the ideal candidate to become the second Sith Lord.

In an attempt to intercept the stolen Death Star plans, Vader found Maul and the two had a duel to the death. Although Vader would ultimately come out on top, it wasn't easy to do so. This version of Maul may have been an illusion caused by Sith magic, but it's unconfirmed whether he was really resurrected or not.

5 How Did Maul Get & Lose The Darksaber? He won & lost It After A Duel

Pre versus Maul

The Darksaber is a specially crafted saber that was created by the first Mandalorian ever inducted in the Jedi Order. It would eventually find its way to Pre Vizsla, leader of Death Watch, of which Maul would lead. During Maul's reign, Vizsla would eventually attempt to betray him, only to die by his hands in a duel, losing the Darksaber.

Maul kept this weapon until his duel and capture by Darth Sidious, only to get it back sometime later from the Death Watch who recovered it after the fight. He would use it for several battles, but how he lost it isn't clear. What is known about the Darksaber is that it resided on Dathomir and eventually recovered during the age of the New Republic, years after Maul's death.

Mother Talzin

Palpatine had a close relationship with the Nightsisters and even promised Maul's own mother to take her as an apprentice. Threatening to go back on this promise when Maul was of age, she gave her son to Sidious. Years of abuse and careful crafting fueled Maul's hatred for everyone, especially his mother.

Sidious had Maul watched after by Nightbrothers that would leave him nothing but scraps. A contest was held to become the new warrior during the Selection and Maul broke out from his room to win it. He Force-choked his caretaker and his "brothers" and Sidious took Maul as his apprentice despite what he promised Mother Talzin.

Sidious abandoned him, the Jedi never came for him as a child and Obi-Wan nearly killed him. After establishing Crimson Dawn, he cooperated with the Jedi, only to betray them at every turn.

After many close duels with many Jedi, including Ahsoka, Maul went into hiding, only to resurface in search of Obi-Wan. Maul and Ezra Bridger became closely linked and it was during a ritual that they discovered where Obi-Wan was while promising to give Ezra knowledge to defeat the Sith.
