Apparently, David and several other kings of Israel became old prematurely because of the hard life they lived in war and stress. (1Chr. 29:26) Technically, David reigned 40 years and 6 months--7 years and 6 months (7.5 years) in Hebron over Judah and 33 years over all Israel and Judah (2Sam. 5:4-5; 1Chr.29:26). How old he was when he took Abishag as his last wife. He was 70 years old (1Ki. 1:1-4), being 30 when he began to reign for 40 years (2Sam. 5:4) David lived about 25,568 days, which was nothing compared to what God's plan was when man was created. God intended he should live eternally and never grow old, but sin caused man to "come short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:23). How long David lived after making Solomon king isn't stated, but when he drew near death, he gave a final charge to the new king (1Ki. 2:1-9; cp. Josh. 1:6-9).
