The youth football coach, credited with launching the careers of several pro players, had been due to stand trial at Peterborough Crown Court on 12 counts of indecent assault and one of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The trial was due to start on Monday morning but the prosecution asked for proceedings to be adjourned for 24 hours.

That meant it was due to start today. But this morning, Jeremy Benson, prosecuting, told the court Carson had died on Monday morning at 9.44am.

Police say the crash took place in Bottisham near Cambridge - 40 miles from the court.

Benson confirmed it was a ‘single car crash’ and that an investigation is now being carried out.

Carson’s body was identified by wife Pauline on Monday afternoon and the case has been discontinued.

Carson’s offences were alleged to have happened between 1978 and 2009 and involve boys under the age of 16.

As a coach he worked at Norwich City, Peterborough, Cambridge United and Histon FC and, according to his own website which was closed down after his arrest, he fostered links with Mick McCarthy, the current Ireland boss, and Brian Kerr, who was the FAI technical director and Ireland youth manager.

On his website, Carson wrote: "I have a magazine article given to me by a friend in Derry called Mick on Ireland's Future.

“In it, he [McCarthy] says ... 'I recently spent a day at Peterborough United. Their Academy director Kit Carson has been writing to the FAI about them for the past four years and has never got as much as a reply.

“I experienced similar neglect at Millwall when I saw David Connolly torment us at Watford.

“Mick always treated me with respect. Brian Kerr was the same. Brian flew over to Peterborough to see us and I was glad to pick him up at the airport and take him to see our Posh [Peterborough] Youth Team play. Brian invited me to Ireland to watch the Irish trials to understand the levels.

"I don't know if it was arrogance or contempt for the 'plastic Irish' which is why the FAI always ignored people like me.

"I even had a team of Irish boys born in England which I took to tournaments all over Europe travelling with Norwich City. Many of these went on to great things and in some cases due to massive effort on my part actually played for Ireland."

Carson, an Irish citizen who was born in Kent, spoke of his Irish roots on the website and his efforts to gain international recognition for players.

He is said to have influenced English-born players Sean St Ledger and Andy Townsend to play for Ireland.
