Olivia3,750 reviews99 followersFollowFollowAugust 9, 2021See my full review here: https://www.yabookscentral.com/kidsfi...HOW DO DINOSAURS SAY GOODBYE? is an intriguing installment in the How Do Dinosaurs series. Do they hide in their bedroom with a stomachache because they don't want to go to school without their mothers? Do they grab at Dad's coat when he leaves for work and leave a sad note in his pocket? No, they tell grown-ups how they feel and face their fears. What I loved: This would be a great book for children who have intense goodbyes and fears of being away from parents that helps them to put into words better ways to say goodbye. The illustrations, as per all the books in this series, are fantastic with detailed dinosaurs (who are also labeled) and their human parents. The rhyming text will definitely appeal to young picture book readers. What left me wanting more: This is certainly a difficult topic, and it can be tough to read about for sensitive children. I found some of the questions to be a bit harsh, as they did not seem like such terrible things. For instance, the one who was crying could be showing an appropriate emotion in some situations, and school can be scary! Crying can be an emotion that is OK to express. Leaving Dad a note that says I miss you in his pocket also seemed more sweet than inappropriate (or maybe it was just supposed to be the tugging on his jacket that was wrong?). I was not sure how I felt about some of the intended bad examples, as they did not always seem so inappropriate. I did agree with the ways that it ends with showing as good ways to handle though.Final verdict: The great illustrations and rhyming phrases of HOW DO DINOSAURS SAY GOODBYE? will help little ones who need assistance with troubled partings. I would recommend this in cases where that specific help is needed. Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
Kate M. ColbyAuthor 19 books76 followersFollowFollowJune 29, 2025Jack borrowed this book from the Gardner Library. I picked it because he loves this series. We read it tonight before bed as preparation for saying goodbye, as Daniel and I will be going on a short trip. Not that Jack is old enough to understand exactly what’s going on. Anyway, it was also a good reminder to me not to get too sappy. He thought the dinosaurs were funny and listened to the whole thing, as usual.

The illustrations are realistic and I love how she introduces so many dinosaurs to young readers.Well done addition to this series.
Dina556 reviewsFollowFollowFebruary 5, 2022A picture book with a SEL focus is a great start, plus this book is like the others in the series. Overall, a good book, especially useful if a child is having a hard time saying goodbye to someone like their grandmother leaves to go home or their parents are going out for the night. Two thumbs up for this book!
Mindy Alyse Weiss135 reviews33 followersFollowFollowOctober 1, 2021Yay for another book in this amazing series! Goodbyes are so hard for kids. I love how this book helps make saying goodbye a bit easier. The dinosaur illustrations and humor throughout the book are awesome.
Corinne199 reviewsFollowFollowOctober 8, 2021I preordered this book for my nephew and I as we love to read them together. However, this one was not as good as the others. The pictures are amazing, as usual, but I feel like it could have been better written. I still love the series but I was just a little disappointed in this one.
Villain E4,007 reviews19 followersFollowFollowAugust 26, 2022Same review for every book in this series: Love the art. Kids love dinosaurs. But way too much time is spent on the bad behavior, which give kids suggestion on new ways to pout or throw a fit, and way too little time spent on good behavior.

Janet3,681 reviews37 followersFollowFollowJanuary 23, 2022The latest title in Jane Yolen’s picture book stories starring the dinosaurs which always have a way of teaching children good basic life skills. This time it’s what is a good way to say goodbye. Yes, these titles have a message, but the series is imaginative in text as well as Mark Teague’s illustrations is visual in an imaginative way.

Barbara15k reviews316 followersFollowFollowDecember 31, 2021It's hard to believe that there have been 14 of these wildly-popular How Do Dinosaurs picture book. This one has the same appeal as its predecessors as it features anthropomorphized dinosaurs learning to deal with saying goodbye in various situations. Youngsters will get such a charge out of the large beasts inside human houses as they shake their heads, cry, hide, deface the wall, and even mess up the room after a loved one's departure. All these examples of bad behavior will not doubt be recognizable to many young readers and adults, and then the rhyming text shows the proper way to behave even when it hurts to see someone leave. Parents, caregivers, and teachers would be foolish not to collect all of these titles and share them with youngsters. It's always good to laugh at one's behavior while reflecting on how to change it for the better. The pairing of this author and this illustrator is simply genius because neither one of them misses a beat, and oh, those splendid double-page spreads are so much fun to view. Here's hoping that readers never have to say goodbye to this series.
