Answer

MLA

The MLA citation format for a personal interview or personal communication (email, text, etc.) varies by the type of communication.

Interview you conducted

  • Rodrigo, Olivia. Personal interview with the author. 10 Aug. 2020.

  • Rodrigo, Olivia. Zoom interview with the author. 2 May 2024.

Communication to you

  • Xiong, Jo. Email to the author. 5 Dec. 2023.

  • Lamar, Kendrick. Text to the author. 27 Feb. 2025.

APA

APA does not require you to list a personal interview in your References list. All you need to do is include a parenthetical citation in the body of the paper, using this format:

  • (First Initial. Last name, personal communication, date of interview).

  • Example:

    • (B. Mars, personal communication, May 10, 2020).
