You can install a ceiling track curtain rod and run a curtain through the middle of the room to give them privacy when they want. Ikea makes them and I believe Home Depot has them too.

If you install a wall, the criteria for a legal bedroom requires each have a window and a closet.

Room dividers, bookcases, curtains from ceiling to floor. If you build a permanent wall each "room" would need a separate entry and window per building codes.

Legally, as in when one wants to sell their house:

a Bedroom must have a Direct Means Of Egress (window of specific sizes) AND

    a built in closet.

Going backwards from there- curtains/folding panels... et al

To be a legal bedroom it must have a window and closet in each bedroom. Otherwise just put in a temporary divider.

You could hang a curtain or use pieces of furniture to create a division

Put two bookcases side by side to make a wall. One side with shelves to each bedroom and the back will be to the two bedrooms also. Kids can hang posters on the blank wall or even you can paint it with chalkboard paint for them to draw on.

Hi Joan: If you want a barrier, you can buy a screen for that purpose or, you can put some Heavy Duty Command Strips https://www.bing.com/shop?q=Command%20Hooks%20Heavy%20Duty&FORM=POLFLT&cvid=a8963e32841241d98fbbf27558a7ff46&originIGUID=6B64F6D82B2C4C4C948EEF24CF3C2ECB on the ceiling and attach a curtain using https://www.homedepot.com/s/clip%20on%20curtain%20rings?NCNI-5&searchAnalytics=clip%20on%20curtain%20rings-_-type%20ahead-_-0|1|1-_-typeahead-v2-search-api-_-clip%20on%20curta.

If you want the curtain to slide, you can use a heavy duty PVC pipe attached to the ceiling using eye bolts: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Hardware-Fasteners-Bolts-Eye-Bolts/N-5yc1vZc28e?NCNI-5&searchRedirect=eye%20bolts&semanticToken=j10r20r10f240400000004_20250725020601840206487581_us-central1-h9vr%20j10r20r10f240400000004%20%3E%20st%3A%7Beye%20bolts%7D%3Ast%20ml%3A%7B24%7D%3Aml%20ct%3A%7Beye%20bolts%7D%3Act%20nr%3A%7Beye%20bolts%7D%3Anr%20nf%3A%7Bn%2Fa%7D%3Anf%20qu%3A%7Beye%20bolts%7D%3Aqu%20ie%3A%7B0%7D%3Aie%20qr%3A%7Beye%20bolts%7D%3Aqr

How about using a screen to partition space. This way it still is compliant with safety codes.

Hi Joan, are you looking for a permanent division or just temporary?

    Temporary & Flexible Options:

    1. Curtains:
    2. Suspend a curtain rod from the ceiling and use draperies to create a soft division. Velvet curtains offer more privacy, while sheer fabrics can maintain a sense of openness.
    3. Room Dividers:
    4. Freestanding screens, whether decorative panels, bookshelves, or fabric screens, can be moved and rearranged as needed.
    5. Sliding Doors:
    6. Sliding doors, including pocket doors that slide into a wall cavity, offer a semi-permanent solution that can be opened or closed as needed.
    7. Furniture as Dividers:
    8. Strategically placed furniture like bookcases, tall cabinets, or even a sofa can create a visual and functional division.
    9. Screens:
    10. Decorative screens, like folding screens or those made from repurposed materials, can add a touch of style while dividing a space.
    11. Rugs:
    12. Using different rugs to define different zones can create a subtle visual separation.

    More Permanent Solutions:

    1. Partition Walls:
    2. Built-in partition walls, constructed from materials like drywall or plastic, offer the most definitive division and can be customized with doors or windows.
    3. Glass Partitions:
    4. Glass partitions, whether framed or frameless, allow light to pass through while still creating a visual separation.
    5. Elevations:
    6. Creating a raised platform or sunken area can define different zones within a room.
    7. Color Zoning:
    8. Using different paint colors or wallpaper patterns can visually separate areas without any physical barriers.
