It can absolutely drop in the middle of some tall grass. Or it can drop on flat ground. But are they still bugged? I believe for a while pigs were bugged so that if they were in TOO GOOD a mood they wouldn't drop truffles...? So if your pig is grown, has access to a field outside with grass everyday, and it's not winter... Usually dig one up before I can run over there and get my cows milk and eggs. Once dug there can be up to a 66% chance the pig will hunt for another truffle, then another chance, etc etc (depending on friendship level with the pig). I once had my pig dig up 7 truffles over the course of a single day. 2-3 truffles a day was more common than anything else though.I don't think he takes more than an hour to dig up a truffle, so you can be pretty sure you're done if he hasn't done any more by noon.
