I'm making a bollywood cake, and I'd like to pipe around the fondant designs with gold icing...I have luster dust, can I just mix it in, or is there a better way? Thanks!

Usually you pipe the design with yellow or tan royal icing, then mix your luster dust with vodka and paint it onto the dried royal icing.

Try this... Mix a small amount of gold luster with vegetable oil. Paint the inside of a parchment piping bag with the gold/oil mixture before adding your regular white icing. Pipe away! Do this in small batches, otherwise the gold starts to become diluted by the icing.

I was worried that painting was the only answer. I'll try that piping bag technique.THANKS!!

I know this is an older post but does this technique work with any type of frosting? Or only royal icing? I have some intricate designs to put on a cake and need to do this with silver.

I would think one is going to have to test this for themselves. And remember oil and royal icing do not mix! I would use a almost stiff consistency buttercream for this.
