How Do I Reset My Alarm's Battery?

Does your alarm keep alerting or sounding off for no particular reason? This can usually be linked to your alarm's battery. Low battery chirps or an end of life signal are a way of alerting the surrounding area that it's time for a replacement battery or new alarm. But what if you've already replaced the battery with a new one and it's still alerting the surrounding area? We'd recommend resetting the alarm to stop the low battery alert. You can reset your alarm by following these quick steps:

• Disconnect all power sources (if you're replacing a hardwired alarm's battery, you'll want to to disconnect if from any wiring. If it's a plug in alarm, you'll want to remove it from from the outlet.
• Press and hold the test/silence button for 20 seconds. You'll find this on the front of your detector.
• Reconnect all power sources (reconnect the wiring or plug back into the outlet). Your alarm should now be reset. This will only work with alarms that implement a battery as a primary or secondary source of power. i.e. Hardwired alarms with a battery backup, battery powered alarms and plug in alarms with a battery backup.

More info on reseting your detector: To reset your First Alert smoke alarm's battery, you'll first need to silence the current low-battery chirp. Start by removing the alarm from its mounting bracket on the wall or ceiling. For most models, you can do this by twisting it counter-clockwise. Once the unit is off the bracket, unplug the power connector if it's a hardwired alarm, or simply open the battery compartment on the back of the alarm. Remove the old battery and properly dispose of it. Some alarms will continue to chirp even after the battery is removed due to residual power. To clear this, press and hold the test button for about 15-20 seconds to drain any remaining charge. This is a crucial step that ensures the alarm's memory is cleared and the low-battery signal is reset.

Once the old charge is cleared, insert a brand new battery into the compartment. It's important to use a fresh, high-quality battery, such as a 9-volt or AA alkaline, that hasn't been sitting around for a long time. Make sure you install the battery in the correct direction, aligning the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. If it's a hardwired alarm, reconnect the power connector to the pigtail wiring in the junction box, and then twist the alarm back onto the mounting bracket until it clicks into place. Finally, press the test button once more to confirm that the alarm is working properly and the low-battery chirp is gone. If the chirp continues, you may need to repeat the process, as some models are more finicky than others. If the problem persists, the alarm may have reached its 10-year end-of-life and needs to be replaced entirely.
