- How do you fly a helicopter?
| Evil_Engel 12 years ago#1I've flown heli's in vice city back when it was a breeze, and gta 4 when it was a bit more challenging, and now we have this. I feel like I'm missing something and I don't know what. I finished flight school but they don't really show you what to do all the instructions given was that they were more forgiving than an airplane. Even with max flying I can barely control these things but then I go online and occasionally race with helicopters and no one seems to be worse than me. If nothing else everyone else moves faster. What It seems like to me to move straight you push forward on the thumb stick and either hold R or L trigger. This often has the effect of making the heli lose or gain altitude however. If I stop holding R or L I can still move forward for a while but eventually stop. The wobble while flying around is bad but I don't know if I'm even moving forward correctly. What am I doing wrong?Not all who wander are lost. |
| Chisoka 12 years ago#2Personally, I prefer the face buttons for ascending and descending, leaving the left and right triggers for rotating the helicopter anti-clockwise and clockwise, it's easier than trying to use your left and right fore and middle fingers for delicate manoevering. R* should have left the classic controller option for vehicle and aircraft handling in the game as they did in IV. |
| B0vril 12 years ago#3Certainly when I first... flyed.. a helicopter it seemed really unstable, but I guess it all clicked at some point because I can maneuver them really well now. I really impress myself sometimes at how good I am.You might just need more practice. None the less, here are the basic controls, & how I fly that might help:For the most part it's just gentle minor or gradual corrections that help you have a smooth flight. Also try & ignore the natural instability of the helicopters & keep the Left Stick steady.Right Trigger ascends. - To fly forward the helicopter has to be tilted forward while ascending. So you need to hold the Right Trigger & push forward on the Left Stick. - Keeping the Right Trigger pressed & the Left Stick steady whilst pushed forward, allows you to really pick up quite a speed. - Going forward will cause you descend slightly over time, so you may need to let off the Left Stick slightly after a while, & you don't always need to go full pelt with the Right Trigger either. - You can also pull back on the Left Stick to slow down, brake or reverseLeft Trigger descends - You can use the Left Trigger instead of the Right Trigger if you want to descend quickly whilst moving.Tilting the Left stick left or right rolls the helicopter. - Rolling the helicopter in combination with holding the Right Trigger will allow a kind of strafe. You can modify this further by using diagonal directions on the Left Stick to move at any angleLeft & Right Bumper yaw(rotate) the helicopter. - Using the yaw & roll in combination allows for really tight maneuvers, whether small course corrections or a quick 180 while landing. |
| Navex 12 years ago#4It's going to sway/rock/falter no matter how good you are at flying or how high your Flying level is as that's just how they designed the flight mechanics this time. Easiest remedy to this is just go slower when flying anything. Specifically the helicopters go nuts when you're flying really fast and trying to maneuver them special at the whim so those you really have to slow down with. |

I can power across the map with feeling the helicopters going nuts. |

| EarlJenson 12 years ago#7Like B0vril said, more practice helps.Although I still find it pretty hard to gauge your position when making precise maneuvers... that it "How close am I to the ground? How close to the bottom of this bridge?" I always feel like I'm going to start clipping things with a rotor, and when I change the camera angle it's all "Ugh. That thing I'm worried about is nearly 20 feet lower!""Objects in mirror...", I guess. |
