How to read a metric dial caliper

	The reading on a dial caliper is a combination of the value shown on the main beam scale and value indicated on the dial. Read on if you have a metric dial caliper or see How to read an imperial dial caliperfor reading imperial measurements.
	Step 1 – Look at the main scale When taking measurements, you should first read the value on the main scale. This will be the number immediately to the left of the reference edge. On a metric dial caliper, this will be given in millimetres (mm). Each increment on the scale is equal to 1mm.
	Step 2 – Look at dial indicator Next, read the value shown on the dial indicator. On most metric dials each increment is equal to 0.02mm.
	Step 3 – Add the two values together To get your total reading, add the two values together. In this example, the caliper is showing a reading of 15.43mm. 15mm (shown on the beam scale) + .43mm (shown on the dial scale) = 15.43mm.
