Like in other languages, people end up thinking that the word for bathroom/toilet sounds "dirty", so they create another euphemism to avoid the former word for it... just to be replaced eventually by the next euphemism. If you think of it, people say "bathroom" even if there is no bath, and you also have washroom (even if you can't wash anything), restroom (are you resting?), lavatory (even if you can't wash anything), loo (UK), facilities, gentlemen's/ladies'... Spanish has (cuarto de) baño, lavabo, váter (for "water closet"), retrete, escusado, aseo, servicio, tocador, urinario, evacuatorio... I would stick to "baño" or "lavabo" for the next two generations or so.
