How Do You Spell RESPECT?

The word RESPECT is used in many business relationships. People often say they respect a person’s abilities and achievements. A particular organization may be said to be respected in its field or industry. But, has this become an empty word with a small impact from overuse?

I see respect as a multi-dimensional concept that should never be used lightly or as a substitute for the real exercise of leadership. Also, I believe it is primarily a personal concept.

RESPECT

R = recognition: To be effective, respect must recognized. You need to clearly acknowledge another person’s strengths and achievements. High functioning team members show respect for each other.

E = exact: It is specific to the strengths, achievements and working style of an individual. It’s not simply a general statement of recognition.

S = sine qua non: This is Latin for “an indispensable or essential thing.” This says that respect is not optional, but is a requirement for great working relationships.

P = pride: The person on the receiving end of respect develops pride in their work which encourages them to continue their achievements and it provides great personal satisfaction.

E = excited: We should all be enthusiastic about this concept and share it! It’s a gift that can become contagious for the whole team and beyond.

C = considerate: The habit of respect means we are not self-centered. It’s an appreciation of each person’s unique abilities.

T = thankfulness: Being thankful means being glad we have the opportunity to work with each other. This can be for a business enterprise or for the noble cause of a nonprofit organization.

How has RESPECT been a benefit for you?
