Grendel is a monster who killed people for their blood. Beowulf pretended to sleep so he could trick Grendel and kill him so no one else would die. Grendel’s mother was not happy that Beowulf killed Grendel. Grendel’s mother killed a friend of Hrothgar, the king. Beowulf went to Grendel’s mother and killed her without any weapons. 50 winters later a dragon was terrorizing the Geats, so Beowulf had a duty to go and kill the dragon so he would stop terrorizing the Geats. It also says “As Grendel and Beowulf battled across them” (Raffel 300). This is saying that Beowulf and Grendel battled across the men in the mead hall. Also, it is saying that if they battled across the men then Beowulf fought Grendel all by himself, and he won. Beowulf defeated Grendel all by himself. This is saying that Beowulf is strong. Another way Beowulf is shown that is a strong and responsible leader is when he jumped into the lake to fight Grendel’s mother. Beowulf was being responsible because Grendel’s mom killed Hrothgar’s good friend, so he went to go get her for that. Beowulf was being strong by jumping into the lake to fight Grendel’s mom. Also, he is strong and responsible when he goes to battle the dragon. He is strong when the dragon hurts him but he stills goes to fight even more. Beowulf didn’t run after he got hurt he stayed and fought to kill the dragon even though he was in pain. This says that Beowulf is strong, and it also says that he was responsible by killing the dragon for he Geats. Beowulf is shown in many ways how strong and responsible he is, but these are just few of the many

How Does Beowulf Present Grendel's Mother

The story of Beowulf portrays a character that is highly mysterious and a great example of an oxymoron. Grendel’s mother is portrayed as either a great mother or a wicked witch depending on whose eyes the reader views the story through. Many readers may argue that Grendel’s mother is depicted as a caring and nurturing mother. Throughout the story the author portrays a mother that is trying to fight to protect and avenge her son. For example, in line 504 the author strategically includes the phrase, “To avenge her only son.”…

    Grendel's Mother In Beowulf

“By as much as a maiden’s strength, a woman’s warfare, is less than an armed man’s (line 1283-1284).” This statement made by the poet of Beowulf takes on an ironic turn as Grendel’s mother takes on the mighty Beowulf. We can see in current society that women are being looked down on as inferior to their male counterparts. This is not new to us, as women have fought for equal rights for over a century. The poet thinks no differently as he imposes a societal commonality on the female “monster,” only to turn around and present her in a manner in which she puts on a greater fight against Beowulf than her son.…
