How Does One Swim in Minecraft?

I really don't understand it at all. Whenever I'm in water I just look up and tap space bar repeatedly to try and get out of the water. I can't detect any rhyme or reason to the swimming mechanics of this game. I can't go very deep at all without knowing I will never be able to get back up to the surface. So I would like for someone to kindly explain to me the controls and whatever else I need to know to not constantly have troubles with water in Minecraft. Thank you in advance. Hold space. You can do this on land to constantly jump,too. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Space to go upwards. Arrow keys to move around. Mouse to aim. Just like on land, except space floats upwards instead of jumping. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Thanks, voicelessbard for the great avatar and sig! (search him in the MC forums)
