How far away do you have to be so mobs can spawn in a dark room?

I just built a mob trap. It took me about 1 day( Remaking, adjustments, etc.) It is working fine but I was wondering how far away do you have to be so mobs can spawn in a dark room. 16 blocks. since that's the block radius where you can hear monster groans. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack if i behave weird in my post; it's not that i am weird actually. Three answers and only one was correct... Good lord.. They'll only spawn 24-128 blocks away from you.. However, if you're more than 32 blocks away, they'll stop moving and randomly despawn. They'll also despawn immediately if you're more than 128 away from them. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

I don't know why people are saying 24. They can spawn anywhere from 12-128 blocks away. Proof is with the Enderman grinder which I just learned how to build, and you need a 43 foot drop plus another 20 blocks higher to build the contraption to make them fall. So obviously it can be more than 50 blocks away and still spawn. So I think the whatever-128 is the trustworthy answer. endermen can teleport so maybe they spawned 24 blocks away Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.

24 blocks. The only exception is a spawner, which can spawn enemies right in front of you, but if you just have a big dark space with no spawner, then you have to be at least 24 blocks away for the mobs to spawn. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Nah the setup I have makes is so endermen will only spawn exactly where I want them to, which is on a pressure pad that drops them 43 blocks. Thanks for the info xD I reeded the wiki, but I forget what was the range. Anyway, is rare, because I was in a Ravine, but was dark. When I walk through it, skeletons spawn suddenly front of me, and it wasn't one time, was like 5 times. There wasn't any spawner Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Dude you disproved what you are saying in your own words. They are spawning on the pressure pads in the trap at least 43 blocks above you then you have your multiple layers of that above so that the pistons push em. anyway, they arent spawning less then 24 blocks, THE ANSWER IS MOBS WILL NOT SPAWN WITHIN 24 BLOCKS OF A PLAYER.There.
