The Bible teaches that Jesus stayed on earth for forty days after His resurrection. Luke writes, “To whom also He showed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3). These forty days were filled with purpose. Jesus appeared to His disciples, strengthened their faith, confirmed fulfilled prophecies, and prepared them to carry the gospel to the world.

Understanding what Jesus did during these forty days gives us a deeper appreciation of His love, patience, and commitment to His followers.

Jesus’ Purpose During the Forty Days

After His resurrection, Jesus did not immediately ascend to heaven. Instead, He remained on earth to prepare His disciples for the work ahead. Their faith had been shaken by His death, and they needed reassurance, instruction, and spiritual restoration. Jesus’ appearances removed doubt, healed wounds, and provided clear confirmation that He truly lived again.

Among His first and most famous post-resurrection encounters took place on the road to Emmaus.

The Road to Emmaus: Teaching From the Scriptures

Two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, overwhelmed by sorrow and confusion. Jesus Himself joined them, though they did not recognize Him at first. As they walked, He explained the prophecies concerning His life, death, and resurrection. Luke records, “Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Luke 24:27).

Jesus showed how prophecies such as Isaiah 53, Deuteronomy 21:23, and Ezekiel 2:3–6 pointed to His mission and sacrifice. Every specification had been fulfilled exactly. This teaching provided the disciples with a foundation of confidence they would need for their future ministry.

Later, Jesus revealed Himself to them, and this encounter strengthened their conviction that He was indeed the promised Messiah.

Jesus Opens the Disciples’ Understanding

Jesus further explained His mission when He appeared to the larger group of disciples. Scripture says, “Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45). He continued, “Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things” (Luke 24:46–48).

During these forty days, Jesus laid the theological foundation for the church. He taught that:

• His suffering and resurrection fulfilled prophecy
• The gospel message centered on repentance and forgiveness
• The disciples were to carry this message to all nations

His teaching prepared them for the Great Commission.

The Need for Affirmation and Reconciliation

Beyond instruction, Jesus used this time to restore and reconcile relationships.

Thomas: From Doubt to Faith

When Jesus first appeared to the disciples, Thomas was absent (John 20:19–22). Hearing the others’ testimony, he refused to believe unless he could see and touch Jesus’ wounds himself (John 20:24–25). In mercy, Jesus later appeared again and invited Thomas to examine His hands and side (John 20:26–27). This compassionate act led Thomas to declare, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus then proclaimed, “Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” (John 20:29).

Through Thomas’ experience, Jesus gave reassurance to future believers who would trust without physical proof.

Peter: Restored for Leadership

Peter also needed healing. He had denied Jesus three times during the trial (Luke 22:54–62). Though heartbroken, he remained loved by the Lord. Jesus approached Peter openly and asked him three times, “Do you love Me?” (John 21:17). Each repeated question matched Peter’s three denials and offered restoration.

When Peter affirmed his love, Jesus instructed him, “Feed My sheep.” This powerful moment demonstrated Jesus’ forgiveness and His desire to restore Peter to leadership. It confirmed that God can redeem failure and strengthen the repentant heart.

Many Unrecorded Events During the Forty Days

The Gospel of John gives an important insight into the forty days. He writes, “Many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book” (John 20:30). And again, “There are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books” (John 21:25).

These verses show that Jesus likely performed many additional miracles, teachings, and acts of encouragement that were not recorded. As Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us, “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God.” God preserved what was necessary for our salvation, while other details were meant specifically for the disciples of that time.

Preparing the Disciples for Their Mission

Jesus remained with His disciples so they could witness firsthand that their Savior was alive. This living certainty empowered them to boldly preach the gospel after His ascension.

Before leaving, Jesus entrusted them with a clear commission: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). This Great Commission became the core mission of the early church.

Jesus assured His disciples that He would be with them “always, even unto the end of the world.” During the forty days, He also instructed them to wait in Jerusalem until they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4–5). After giving them these final instructions, Jesus ascended to heaven as they watched (Acts 1:9).

Why the Forty Days Matter

The forty days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension were essential for several reasons:

1. To Provide “Many Infallible Proofs”

Acts 1:3 emphasizes that Jesus left no room for doubt. His resurrection was a historical reality witnessed by many.

2. To Strengthen the Disciples’ Faith

Their fear and confusion turned into bold conviction.

3. To Teach Doctrine and Explain Prophecy

Jesus opened their understanding so they could interpret Scripture correctly.

4. To Restore Broken Hearts

Thomas received assurance, and Peter received restoration.

5. To Prepare Them for Evangelism

Jesus gave clear instructions for global mission.

6. To Confirm the Plan of Salvation

He showed that His life, death, and resurrection fulfilled prophecy and made salvation available to all.

During this time, He appeared repeatedly to His disciples, instructed them in the Scriptures, restored the brokenhearted, and prepared them for the mission of taking the gospel to the world. His loving guidance ensured that the church began its work with strong faith, clear understanding, and unshakable conviction that their Savior lived.
