How long does a Keurig brewer last?

by Pam (Hudson, NY)

The Spank and Burp fix for Keurig brewers.

The Spank and Burp fix for Keurig brewers.

QUESTION:I have had my Keurig K45 for about a year now and then last week it suddenly stopped working. It comes on all right, but when I press the button it doesn’t make any coffee. Is this normal that a Keurig brewer lasts for less than one year? Doesn’t seem right to me.PamANSWER:Pam, hiI have one of the original Keurig brewers and it’s still going strong. A bit beaten up, and I sometimes have problems with the buttons sticking, but otherwise OK.That said, you’re not alone in wondering why your Keurig brewer doesn’t work anymore. A lot of other people are wondering why their Keurigs have stopped working, and want to know how long a Keurig brewer typically lasts. Here are some of the issues we commonly hear about:- My Keurig descaling light stays on- My Keurig doesn't make a full cup of coffee- My Keurig doesn't brew at allAs it turns out, there is a simple and totally weird fix for Keurig brewers when they stop working. It’s called the “slap and burp” fix. At least, that’s what we call it.If you have any of the problems above, and have already tried descaling the brewer, here’s something you can try.Step 1: Unplug the brewer and remove both the water reservoir and drip tray.Step 2: Hold the brewer upside down over the sink and slap the base a few times. And I mean really slap it.Step 3: Put everything back together and try brewing again. Most of the time this works with a couple of good slaps. If not, try it again.I know, it sounds weird. But hundreds of people have tried it and brought their Keurig brewers back to life. One of our readers had the “my Keurig didn’t last very long” problem, tried the slap and burp fix, and then sent us this...Tears of elation!Proper caffeination!Give the Keurig a spank?I thought this was a prank! It works, it works, it works! Now my family can all quit being jerks! Why does it work? The brewer stopped working because of an air bubble in the pump. When you turn the brewer upside down and spank it hard, that air bubble is released, the water flows in, and the problem is resolved. In other words, it's not that Keurig brewers don't last very long. It's just that they have this air bubble problem that needs to be taken care of from time to time.Good luck!Nick

Dec 09, 2024 They keep dying by: Anonymous I am on my third K cup supreme They are only lasting one year and a few months, then go completely dead. No lights, no nothing. I am not buying any more, these are horrible. Once you are past the warrantee they won't help you at all. It seems to have something to do with the descaling. When it comes up for that they die. I have 2 houses so they don't even get used everyday, 6 months at each house. I do have an old 2.0 at my house in Colorado and that one is about 5 years old and still working. Dr. Pepper owns them now and I think they are made real cheap now. Beware,
Jul 11, 2024 Crazy idea to spank and burp, but Works!!! by: Deb W. I had only used my Keuring for a month. My add water light had come on when it was already full from time to time. (First clue.) A week later, then it wouldn't fill water into my cup at all. I had no luck with customer service for warranty since I had no gift receipt, so it was trash bound and I was mad and disappointed. I found this web info and tried it. I "spanked" it very firmly and plugged it in. It worked just fine to make my coffee and I never laughed so hard. Who would ever think to burp a coffee maker? THANK YOU SO MUCH! MADE MY DAY SO MUCH BETTER!!!
Jun 30, 2024 Keurig Issue by: Anonymous 9 year Keurig owner here, same machine. Regular maintenence. Water stopped coming out, tried everything that Keurig and internet suggested. No results. Was fixing to give it a proper funeral. It's old but I figured I would research the problem one more time, im a die hard cant help it. I came across a post about the "slap and burp" method. Sounded logical. Spanked my Keurig and it's back to normal.
Jan 08, 2024 Amazed this actually worked by: Anonymous I have a k-express and did everything short of taking the stupid thing apart to no avail, but lo and behold all I had to do was smack the heck outta it and finally it started brewing again! Amazing
Apr 29, 2023 Risen from the Dead by: Anonymous I was so frustrated as I was in the midst of cleaning my Keurig and it seemed to stop pumping water in or spewing out. Lights came on, it heated, but alas, no water came out. I smacked it around and turned it upside down in case something was lodged somewhere. I gave up and sat it aside, resorting to an old drip machine for a few days. I was about to order a new model when I read on a review that someone's old K started working after sitting for a while. So I tried it again and hallelujah, it came on just like old times! I don't know how long the miracle will last, but I'll enjoy it as long as I can! This baby got me through the pandemic, and I hated saying goodbye. I hope it lives for more reviving brews!
Jan 22, 2023 Slap it and it works! by: marshall Thanks!!!!!!!! it WAS the fix!!
Jul 02, 2022 My Keurig does not give me a 14 oz cup coffee by: Ken I have had my Keurig for maybe 7 or 8 years. I clean it as much as it says to but lately it is not giving me a full 14 0r 16 oz cup of coffee. It only gives me a 8 or 10 oz cup. What can I do.
Mar 31, 2022 Here's the thing.... by: Anonymous You'd expect that after the gestation period of 9 months and birth, babies usually need a little jiggling and then there comes the burp... I mean this Keurig issue is sounding a lot like a baby hahah
Feb 27, 2022 Much to my husband's surprise by: Anonymous This solution absolutely worked for my machine....Hope it helps many others enjoy their morning coffee!!!
Jan 12, 2022 K145 7 plus years and going strong! by: Anonymous I’ve had the Keurig OfficePro K145 since 2014. I have descaled it only once, since I use bottled water instead of tap water. It has a handy "drain" function to empty the reservoir. It weighs 2X more than the smaller, but similar looking K50.I have not had to burb and swat the machine. It is still making perfect coffee going on 8 years with daily use!I think the pump and parts in this machine are better quality than the other models, because it was designed for office use. Back then, Keurig sold the K145 for $120, because they made so much money on the pods. I see them priced $350 - $800 now. Check back in 8 years from now to see if it still works.
Jun 27, 2021 Unbelievable! by: Anonymous This 100% worked on my Keurig 2.0 brewer!!
Apr 19, 2021 7 year old Keurig by: Anonymous I just used this technique after my 7 year old Keurig kept giving a descaling alert light adjust a few weeks after I descaled it. Was hardly pouring any coffee and I’d checked the needle already for a clog. Was ready to trash it when I read this! Did as directed, gave it a few good spanks over the sink, one final insertion of a paper clip into the needle, added water, good as new! Thank you!
Mar 27, 2021 Cleaned but Keurig still dispenses debris by: BERN I have a 7 year old Keurig Vue. I recently cleaned it and no joke put 2 gallons of vinegar through it. I've been cleaning and rinsing for weeks. The machine still dispenses bits and debris. It's a lot better than before but I cant seem to rinse enough to stop the debris. Wondering if I should get a new machine or keep trying. The machine works fine. I just can't get it clean enough!
Mar 20, 2021 Burping Works by: Anonymous This is my 2nd Keurig and I ended up with the same issues as my first one and as everyone else seems to have despite my diligence in descaling, type of water, etc. I started shopping around for a different brand but out of desire not to spend more money I searched online and found all of the comments on Coffee Detective regarding the "burping method". I used a paper clip and poked it into the brew hole (where the pokey thing is) and turned the Keurig upside down and hit it several times and I have my coffee maker back!! And yes bubbles came out of the brew hole after putting the paper clip in and moving it around. I didn’t realize that was a thing until I went back to the comments again. Super happy to have saved myself the money!
Jan 26, 2021 Thank you so much! by: Candice Awesome post. Just brought my 13 year old Keurig back to life with a spanking!
Dec 23, 2020 Keurig by: Anonymous I thought my keurig was done but I slapped it a couple of times and it really did work for real. I thought I was going to have to buy a new one. Thank you
Dec 15, 2020 B40 STILL GOING STONG by: Fred I have an original B40 model that I have had for over 16 years. I travel for work and take it on the road with me. Keeping it clean and doing the occasional slap keeps it going. I also have a newer K550 at home that I have had for about 5 years. I love both of my Keurigs.
Dec 12, 2020 It Really Worked!! by: Anonymous I have had my Keurig Platinum Plus (QVC) for about 8;years and haven't really had to descale it very many times. (I use filtered water and run the rinse cycle every time I make a cup.) A couple of months ago, it started acting up, slow and not full stream — not even a complete cup. So I wound up descaling with white vinegar. Well, in the last day or so, it started to act up again. I was starting to consider a new machine when I saw your article. I did as you suggested and gave my Keurig a slap on the bottom and now is working beautifully! Thanks so much for the hint!
Nov 08, 2020 CAN'T BELIEVE IT! by: PATRICIA,.SOMERVILLE TXAnonymous I take good care of my Keurig Elite, but after 2 yrs., this morning it kept shutting off before brewing. SO SAD FOR THE PRICE!!! Anyway, I tried this method, and VOILA'! It worked! Thank you, thank you!!!
Oct 15, 2020 Worked for us! by: Jami Thanks for the tip - it seemed to work for us!
Sep 13, 2020 Smack it by: Carol Graziano My Keurig is about 6 years old. Came on this site after the needle and vinegar. Turned it upside down gave it a few good smacks. I cannot believe it. Works like a charm.
Sep 07, 2020 It works by: Anonymous Thank you all. I did as you said, unplugged it, turned it upside down, slapped it and it works again.
Aug 16, 2020 going on 7 years now by: Anonymous I got a keurig vue 700 about 7 years ago because it is able to brew a 20 oz cup of coffee at a time (hubby likes his coffee in the morning). First time I have EVER cleaned it was this morning and it's as good as new. Use it every day, multiple times a day. I is made to last in my opinion.
Jun 30, 2020 Keurig Brewer by: Anonymous My Keurig has to be 11-12 years old.. I descale it occasionally, whenever it starts to act up, I clean it. I do the needle clean for the pins and then slap it on the bottom and it comes back to life.
May 27, 2020 Yay! by: Mary I gave mine a good swat on the bottom. Fullest cup & best cup of coffee I've had in a while. We just descaled & cleaned it & still had trouble. Thank you for the tip!
