Spray tans are becoming more common as people want to achieve a beautiful glow without the health risks of traditional tanning or tanning beds. The popularity of spray tanning has been growing since scientists discovered the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays in 1960 however, today’s spray tans are not your mom’s spray tans.
Today’s spray tans last longer, look more realistic, and in some cases include ingredients to improve the health of your skin. But just how long does a spray tan last? Let’s look at the typical longevity of a spray tan and different ways you can lengthen the life of your spray tan.
In general spray tans are advertised to last 10 days but this depends on the shade that you choose. A lighter spray tan may last about 5 days, a medium shade may last 7 days, and a darker shade should last 10 days. Spray tans contain dihydroxyacetone or DHA and the more DHA the spray tan contains the longer it lasts.
Darker shades of spray tan contain larger amounts of DHA which is why they tend to last longer than lighter shades. In order to get the most out of your spray tan, there are things you can do to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.
Before Your Spray Tan Some of the most important steps in making your spray tan last longer take place before you get your spray tan. Properly prepping your skin can help the spray tan adhere better and therefore last longer. First, you shouldn’t use any type of exfoliant on your skin within 24 hours prior to getting your spray tan.
Although exfoliating right before a spray tan is bad that doesn’t mean that you should skip it altogether. Exfoliating more than 24 hours before your spray tan will help get rid of dry, flaky skin that results in streaks and blotches. Second, skip oily moisturizers in the 24 hours before your spray tan as the oil creates a barrier on your skin that will cause the spray tan to absorb unevenly leaving splotches and streaks.
Additionally, you should skip waxing or shaving in the 24 hours before spray tanning because products can get left behind that prohibit your skin from absorbing the tan. Also, waxing opens your pores which will allow the spray tan to seep in causing splotches and dark spots.
After Your Spray Tan Wearing loose clothing to your spray tan appointment will help prevent the spray tan from rubbing off on your clothes while it is drying. It is also important to keep your skin moisturized after your spray tan. Try applying a lotion that contains coconut or jojoba oil within minutes of getting out of the shower to lock in moisture and prevent your tan from fading so quickly.
Lastly, after getting a spray tan you should apply a tinted moisturizer to help maintain the tan for longer. This last step is especially important after swimming or any prolonged water exposure.
