American Dental Association American Dental Association answer Generally, it takes about two weeks for you to get a permanent ceramic crown. That's because your dentist will send the model of your permanent tooth to be finished in dental laboratory. While you wait, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown so that you are able to chew and speak. When the new crown is ready, the dentist places it in your mouth and makes the necessary adjustments. When you and your dentist are satisfied with how it looks and feels, the crown is cemented in place. RealAge RealAge answer Getting a ceramic dental crown can take a while. You will probably need at least a couple of visits with your dentist before the actual crown placement. The crown placement itself is either a one- or two-visit process. Before you get the ceramic crown, you may need a root canal if your tooth is severely decayed. Your dentist might also need to build a foundation so that the crown has support. Your dentist also will prepare the tooth for your ceramic crown by filing the tooth down. After these steps are done, you can start ceramic crown placement process. Some dental offices have special computers and computer programs (called Cerac or CAD-CAM) that allow the dentist to make a 3-D image of your tooth. The computer then makes an an-ceramic (porcelain) crown, and your dentist places it at that same visit. This type of crown procedure saves you a trip to the dentist, and you don't have to worry about temporary crown placement. If your dental office doesn't have Cerac or CAD-CAM, you will need two visits for your ceramic crown. In the first visit, your dentist will make impressions of the tooth needing the crown. The impression will go to a laboratory that will make the permanent ceramic crown. Since it will take a few days or maybe longer to get your permanent crown, your dentist will place a temporary, non-ceramic crown to wear just until your permanent one is ready. Your second visit will happen when your permanent crown is ready for placement. Your dentist will do a final check to make sure it fits well and doesn't need any fine-tuning adjustments. Then he or she will attach (bond) your ceramic crown onto your tooth. At this point, your ceramic crown placement is complete. You can help make it last a long time by brushing your teeth regularly and visiting your dentist at least twice a year. Show More
