A hernia occurs when a small section of the intestine begins to protrude or push through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. It may not always be painful, but it can cause general discomfort that continues to worsen over time. There are several different hernia surgeries that can be performed to correct the problem. Your doctor will evaluate your condition and, after a thorough examination, will decide which type of procedure will work best.
The Procedure for Hernia Treatment
Hernia surgery normally takes less than an hour to complete from the time you are wheeled into the operating room until you enter the recovery area. After the procedure is over, you will remain in recovery for a few hours so the nurses can monitor your condition. When you are fully awake and able to talk to the doctor, you will be released to go home.
Recovery Phase of Hernia Treatment
The recovery process can take up to 14 days. In some cases, it may be slightly longer depending on the extent of the procedure and how long it took the doctor to repair the abdominal wall. Most people are able to resume many of their regular activities within a day or two if they take it easy. The recovery phase of hernia treatment doesn't take very long, but it's important that you continue to follow the doctor's orders.
What to Expect after Hernia Surgery
Just like any other surgical procedure, you will be sore for a few days. The area around the incision will be tender. You may experience feelings of nausea or upset stomach, especially if you exert yourself physically too soon after hernia surgery. The incision may begin to itch or feel tight, but that is part of the healing process and will go away as time passes.
Hernia repair surgery is a simple procedure. It is performed on an outpatient basis and allows you to get back to your normal routine in just a few days. If left untreated, hernias can become extremely painful and eventually lead to other health issues. Most types of hernia treatment are simple procedures that are extremely effective as long as you follow the doctor's orders and don't overdo it.
It's important that you give yourself time to heal before you resume your regular activities after hernia surgery.
