Death StrandingHow Long is Death Stranding?

Get ready for a long hike.

By IGN StaffUpdated: Nov 7, 2019 7:08pm UTC328 commentsDeath Stranding is a journey, but how long does it last? And is the real Death Stranding the friends we make along the way? If you want a detailed accounting of one man's trek across post-apocalypse America, check out our full Death Stranding review. But if you simply want to know how long Death Stranding's story will keep you going, here are the story completion times of four separate playthroughs.

Tristan Ogilvie, Reviewer

By the time the final end credits had finished rolling on my Death Stranding playthrough, I had been playing for just over 42 hours. After that, I returned to the post-credits section to take on a number of optional orders I’d missed the first time out of curiosity, which I invested a further 10 hours into to bring my total time up to 52 hours. I get the sense that if you really wanted to unlock all of the tool upgrades and sunglasses for Sam and so on, there are probably dozens more hours of deliveries to go on top of that, but I have no real interest in any of that now that the pull of the story is no longer there to keep me on the hook.

Mitchell Saltzman, Editorial Producer

My game time clock says that I spent 48 hours to reach the finish line on Death Stranding. Of those 48 hours, it’s pretty fair to say that about 40 or so were spent on the main questline of trying to reconnect the UCA, while the remainder was spent on various side-missions and my own personal quest of trying to restore as many roads as I could. I restored about 20 roads, delivering more than 19,000 materials to them before starting to feel like the effort simply wasn’t worth the payoff. Now that I’m in the endgame, the main driving motivating factor to keep playing would be to try and get five-star connections with NPCs to get whatever equipment reward they offer, but there’s little incentive to do that when my equipment already feels good enough. All in all, I’m pretty comfortable setting the controller down on Death Stranding after 48 hours of play.

Max Scoville, World's Tallest Beyond! Host

It took me just shy of 43 hours to finish Death Stranding’s main campaign. Early on, I split my time between sidequests and deliveries that would move the story forward, but after maybe 20 hours, I stopped messing around and mainlined the campaign. Having finished it, there’s still a smattering of deliveries to make, but nothing that feels especially pressing or appealing. What I’m much more curious about is how Death Stranding will change once the community is playing it. After all, this is a social strand game, and it’s hard to tell how releasing thousands of excited players into the world will affect the landscape. We also haven’t heard a peep about plans for post-launch support. A proper photo mode would be great, and it’d be fun if some more preppers/celebrity cameos got patched in with new bonus deliveries. This game would also be perfectly suited for some ridiculous Christmas DLC, since it’s about delivering an unrealistic amount of parcels, much like Santa Claus. Think about it! A nice jolly red and white outfit for Sam, some colorful twinkly lights around BB, maybe a trike with a red nose and raindeer antl-- what? Oh. Sorry. Yeah, I’m done. Short answer, 43 hours.

Mark Medina, Features Producer

During the first five or so hours of Death Stranding, I was doing any little side thing I could. I would deliver lost parcels, do any extra deliveries – you name it. I quickly discovered that if I ever wanted to progress in the story, I needed to start to let certain things fall by the wayside while I focused on my main mission. Once I mainlined the story, the in-game clock said I had finished it in about 44 hours. But of course, that’s just the main questline. I can’t even calculate how long it would take to do everything else available. On the collectibles front, I won’t say exactly how many there are, but I only found four memory chips during my playthrough. I also didn’t five-star any of the preppers. And if Death Stranding is a game you are feeling the urge to get the Platinum Trophy for, I’d be prepared to be playing it for quite some time.

Reviewed by Randy Nelson

 October 21, 1998

An admittedly ambitious project from the very beginning, Metal Gear Solid has managed to deliver dutifully on all of its promises. From beginning to end, it comes closer to perfection than any other game in PlayStation's action genre. Beautiful, engrossing, and innovative, it excels in every conceivable category. View 10 ImagesReviewed by David Smith

 November 16, 2001

That's an argument that will go on long after I've passed my judgment, though. The fact of the matter is that Metal Gear Solid 2 is more than just a story, more than just a movie. It's a game, and one of the best ever made. If it isn't the best story ever told, well, the games industry obviously just has a ways to go in that regard. I sincerely wonder, however, after playing something like this, how much head room there is to make a better game experience. ... For the time being, it's worth it for the chance to play this game, and to play it again some more.Reviewed by Kaiser Hwang

 November 8, 2002

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is like a fully loaded special edition DVD of your favorite movie. In this case, the movie is Sons of Liberty. ... On the other hand, if you've never played the PS2 version of Metal Gear Solid 2, then this game is a definite must-play. Even though the game is year old, it is still an unbelievable game. I know many of you are wondering if it is better than Splinter Cell, but the truth is, they're really different games. Sure, both involve sneaking, and the government, and all that other hoopla, but the approach is entirely different, just like Gran Turismo 3 and Need for Speed are both racing games. If possible, get both games. If not, try them both out and see which one is more your cup of tea.Reviewed by Ed Lewis

 November 16, 2004

Once again, this is the best game in the Metal Gear Solid series and it pushes the PS2 just as far as it can go. With a total of 20-25 hours for the first time this provides a fantastic experience that will stimulate multiple parts of your brain and make you feel all fuzzy inside. The storyline plays out like a twist-filled spy novel and the rest of the characters and action fit well into this earlier version of the Metal Gear universe. With so much going on this is a game that will easily please fans of the series and help to woo back those who were dismayed by MGS2.Reviewed by Greg Miller

 June 7, 2010

Here's the thing; I could write another nine pages on Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. I could do it with ease. From the missions that have you listening to bird calls to the missions that have you taking photos of ghosts to missions that have you holding people up with bananas, this game is insanely deep. It's crazy and I want to go on and on about every little thing, but there's no reason for me to sit here and spoil it for you. Not only is it in the running for the title of greatest game ever on the PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is one of the greatest games in the entire Metal Gear franchise.
