It's not as massive as some RPGs, but it'll keep you busy for a minute.

Dan Stapleton AvatarBy Dan StapletonUpdated: Oct 28, 2019 5:52 pmPosted: Oct 25, 2019 11:04 pmToday is launch day for The Outer Worlds, and as countless gamers start their journey into Obsidian's latest RPG, many of them are wondering how long it will last them. A few of us here at IGN have already burned through it, so here are our answers to that question. Dan Stapleton, ReviewerThe clock on my save file read about 30 hours when I wrapped up the final mission, though it's important to remember that this number doesn't reflect the amount of time you spend between the most recent autosave and when you die. And though I sailed through the first half without many deaths, I then turned the difficulty up from Normal to Hard and found myself biting the dust fairly regularly if I didn't take my time when planning out a fight in advance. (In the interest of finishing in time for the review I ended up turning it back down to Normal for the final mission, which is not super easy!)So I'd estimate the actual time to be around 35 hours, which includes a pretty thorough job of completing all the sidequests on the first couple of planets and most of the companion quests – though notably, I didn't ever unlock the sixth companion, even though they were under my nose the whole time. I definitely feel like there's value in another playthrough, since my largely goodie-two-shoes character left a fair number of dishonest roads not taken, though I'll probably want to play something else before I dive back in because I don't expect it to be so different that a second playthrough wouldn't get a little repetitive. Angie Harvey, Guides WriterAccording to the in-game clock, my first playthrough of The Outer Worlds, on Normal difficulty, took just over 31 hours. During that time, I managed to complete the main story campaign and the vast majority of side quests that would often require you to explore many of the different planets.Having played only a handful of similar games, I was quite surprised at just how eager I was to delve back into the world of Halcyon to not only explore the different story outcomes but also to rectify the missions that I had managed to botch during my initial playthrough. While I have only briefly played with the Supernova difficulty, I can confidently say that I enjoyed the challenge and fully intend to dedicate a new playthrough just to this mode.
