And don't forget to check out my most asked questions and my full archives for all my Q&A classics.

Dear Dr. Vinny,

How many 3-liter bottles would constitute 2 cases of wine?

—Vincent, Fort Myers, Fla.

Dear Vincent,

Oh goodie, math! Let me back up just a moment for those not fortunate enough to have ever held a 3-liter bottle in their hands. A standard bottle is 750ml, a magnum is the equivalent of two bottles (1.5 liters), and the next size up is twice that, a “double magnum” and at 3 liters it’s the size of four standard bottles. For Champagne and Burgundy, that bottle size is called a "jeroboam," pronounced jer-uh-bo-um. (In Bordeaux, a jeroboam is 4.5 liters.) The epic bottle sizes take on more biblical names as they get larger.

Because wine is a liquid it’s quantified in terms of volume, and the industry standard case of wine is 9 liters, the equivalent of 12 standard bottles. So it would take three 3-liter bottles to equate 1 case, meaning 2 cases would be the equivalent of six 3-liter bottles.
