humpley H Im sure there is something about this on here somewhere but i cant find it. Im looking to do a y pipe back exhaust on my 02 tundra. After the y pipe there is either a cat or resonator? Idk which it is. There are no sensors around it. Was just curious if it could be removed legally in california? #1 · Feb 1, 2012 Im sure there is something about this on here somewhere but i cant find it. I'm not sure if the rear 3rd is actually required to pass. I bought mine new as a trade from NH with the resonator and it still passed emissions via the OBD2 port. I watched the dealership do the test when prepping the vehicle. All the cats should look identical. If you have what looks like a mini muffler, its the resonator. #3 · Feb 1, 2012 You have two catalytic converters, after them they go into a Y pipe. The first piece after the Y pipe is the muffler, the second is the resonator. I am not sure about California laws, but in VA you only need converters. #4 · Feb 1, 2012 You guys think the y-pipe is worth it? I would at lease cut the resonator out when new muffler is installed. If you guys need new cats, do you go aftermarket or stock? #5 · Feb 2, 2012 The y pipe on these trucks is very restrictive. I was going to do a jba y pipe to an electric cut out followed by a muffler. Was just curious if it would pass visual in Cali with third cat gone. Guess there is only one way to find out!!! Lol #6 · Feb 2, 2012

you probably wont pass. i hear the emissions requirements in cali are pretty freakin tough, plus you might get a fine of some sort if they can tell its been tampered with. but as previously stated if it looks like a mini muffler it is a resonator, and cant see how that would affect your emissions #7 · Feb 2, 2012

Actually, the resonator is directly after the y-pipe and the muffler is downstream of that... #8 · Feb 2, 2012 I have a 2002 2UZFE Tundra with California emissions and I only have two cats. Those who are saying they have three, where in the exhaust stream, exactly, is your third one? #9 · Feb 2, 2012 Tell me if that's your resonator at the junction of the Y-pipe. The search feature here bites. I can't even find past things I posted.

That's it. Maybe some are confusing that with a cat? They're about the same size and shape... #12 · Feb 3, 2012 Well, if that's a resonator, there are two different types then because mine looks like a mini muffler and is not identical to the two cats up front without their covers. #13 · Feb 3, 2012 Actually jack, I stand corrected. After reviewing my schematic(s), the unit just aft of the y-pipe on the CA-emissions is an unmonitored catalytic converter, referenced as a "Rear TWC" (three-way catalyst) in my schematics. In other words, these models do not have a resonator unit installed prior to the muffler. #14 · Feb 19, 2012 Anyone have the part number for the cat? Mine's the 2.5 inch pipe, the cat bolts on and is around 13 inches. It bolts on with three bolts on both ends. Drivers side. Stupid thing is rattling. Took it off and tried banging the element back into place, but no luck. Thanks! Insert Quotes Post Reply
