March is here which means that – contrary to the weather outside – as far as many of us are concerned spring has sprung!

With spring comes Easter, the season’s most celebrated holiday and everyone’s favourite excuse to gorge themselves on hot cross buns and chocolate.

The date of Easter Sunday changes every year, so you’d be forgiven for having no idea when it’s falling this year.

If you want to start the countdown, then read on, because here’s the exact number of days we have to go and a reminder of why the date changes.

This year, Easter is falling on Sunday 12 April, which means that, at the time of writing, there are 37 days left until Easter.

It follows therefore that Good Friday is on April 10, and Easter Monday is on April 13.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are considered national holidays just like Easter Sunday, therefore much of the country will be off work on those days.

Why does the date of Easter change each year?

The date of Easter Sunday is subject to change because it always falls on the first full moon after the spring equinox.

The spring equinox falls on Friday 20 March this year, and it sees the sun cross the celestial equator from north to south.
