A war-driven play situated in the century of kings and battles must have drawn a reasonable amount of blood. Driven by ambition, and a struggle for authority and power, death would be a means to achieving such a desirable results.

Listed below is a chronological leaderboard for Macbeth:

Macbeth defeats Macdonwald at the play’s beginning (Act 1). A point for Macbeth!

Macbeth kills a sleeping King Duncan with a dagger (Act 2). 2-0.

Macbeth kills two drunken guards and accuses them of murdering King Duncan (Act 2). 4-0. Double kill!

Macbeth dispatches 3 murderers to kill Banquo. They cut his throat (Act 3). 5-0.

The murderers also kill Macduff’s son… (Act 4, 6-0)

…and also eventually kill Lady Macduff (Act 4). 7-0!

It is inferred that Lady Macbeth kills herself (Act 5). 7-1. (not a murder)

Macbeth slew the Young Siward in an enduring sword fight (Act 5). 8-1.

Finally, Macduff slays Macbeth (Act 5). 8-2.

Of all these planned murders, only 2 aren’t caused by Macbeth. He did not hold the fate of his death; neither did he hold that of Lady Macbeth. These murders are all mainly the doing of Macbeth, though his ambitious wife influences him to make the witches’ prophecy a reality.  To think about it, it all really started with the work of three women…
