Quote from Mazzyandmilk 40 should be enough to make all of the tools. Maybe the armour, I'm not sure.
Do you think i should have some left over for future reference Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Well you can make a diamond pick axe which gets you obsidian, and you can use that to make an enchanting table and aportal to the Nether, so do that if nothing else. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

    3. Seriously, if I have 3 or greater diamonds on me, I will usually make a pick the first time I am near a crafting bench. Anyways, if you have 40 you have enough for a full set of armor, full tools, enchantment table, and some to spare. I'd say go for it. Especially if playing hardcore, no point not making diamond armor when it is available. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

You need 11 diamonds to make all of the tools (including a hoe, but why would you make one?) & you need 24 to make a full set of armor. Finding 40 diamonds will be enough to make all of these, an Enchantment table, & a Jukebox. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

If enchanting diamond items, have more diamonds on hand in case the enchantment is terrible. So if you can get to a stack, then you are set for at least the Ender Dragon, another 32 or so & you should be good for the Wither. (Along with plenty of iron for anvils, and leather & paper for enchanted books. But diamonds are the hard part usually.) Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

I generally aim for 30-35 resources before making my gear, which requires 24-30 (19 for armor sans helmet, 3 or 6 for pickaxes, 2 for sword, 0 or 3 for axe), the variance comes from the fact I use a modded resource to make most of my gear in modded worlds (hence 3 or 6 for pickaxes, one of which is always diamond and is not considered since I find way more of it than the modded resource, likewise, I always use diamond for axes and a diamond hoe in modded worlds, which still adds up to only 10 diamonds, including an enchantment table. For perspective, I collected 91 diamonds in one mine, without using Fortune, but only 37 of the modded resource from 22 ore with Fortune II (close to the average expected, I just used Fortune II since it would probably give enough drops). This leaves a few resources for repairs (I play in 1.6.4 so this means repairing items on the anvil; if you rename them the cost doesn't increase, otherwise, breed villagers to get Mending and never worry about resources ever again), I don't need that many since my playstyle of caving for fun guarantees a steady supply and prior to then (this is after I've made all my "caving gear", which is only used then, built my main base, and defeated the Ender Dragon) I use relatively little resources on gear, mostly on tools (I upgrade to iron, then diamond as soon as I find them and save depleted pickaxes for enchanting (this is also how I got the Fortune tool mentioned above); other than this and bows (very cheap) I never just enchant items and hope for the best but use books). This also applies to modern versions thanks to grindstones so you don't need any more resources than to make your gear, and upgrade it to netherite (you can also upgrade it first since netherite gets better enchantments from the table). Of course, it is a good idea to have a backup of at least the resources to make new gear if you are prone to dying and losing it (in more established worlds this is less of an issue, in my first world I have a villager who sells every diamond item have collected many of each enchantment I use via chest loot, otherwise, I keep a stack of each resource on hand; yes, I do have chests full of blocks but I don't want to uncraft them).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download. TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4. Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
