Tablespoon filled with ground cinnamon: Pin with text.

How many grams in a tablespoon? The quick answer is approximately 15 g, but the tablespoons to grams conversion charts take into account the density of the food ingredient.

For example, 1 tablespoon of water weighs 14.8 g, 1 tablespoon of white sugar - 12.5 g, 1 tablespoon of flour - 7.8 g, and 1 tablespoon of butter - 14.2 g.

I created a few handy tablespoons-to-grams conversion charts for different ingredients.

How to convert tablespoons to grams

To convert one tablespoon to grams, use the following formula. Multiply the volume by the density of the ingredient, where the density is given in grams per tablespoon (g/tbsp).

If the density is shown in grams per milliliter (g/mL), you must multiply the density by 14.79 to convert it to g/tbsp, where 14.79 is a conversion factor.

Here is a simple formula for 1 tablespoon to g calculation: 1 tablespoon x density x 14.79

What is a tablespoon?

A tablespoon is a volume unit equal to three teaspoons or 0.5 fluid ounces. Tablespoons are usually abbreviated as tbsp, T, Tb, or Tbls.

In the Imperial system, one tablespoon of water weighs 17.76 grams; in the United States, it weighs 14.79 grams.

What is a gram?

A gram is a measurement of weight, the SI unit of mass, equal to 1/1,000 of a kilogram and is approximately equivalent to the mass of one cubic centimeter, or one milliliter, of water. The gram (abbreviation as 'g') is an SI unit of weight in the metric system.

Which tablespoon should you use?

There are three main tablespoon sizes used worldwide. These are:

  • US tablespoon is used for American recipes. It equals 14.7868 mL.
  • The metric tablespoon is used in the UK, Australia, and the Commonwealth. It is equal to 15 mL.
  • The imperial tablespoon is an old imperial tablespoon measurement that is now replaced with the metric tablespoon in the United Kingdom. It equals 17.7582 mL.

If you follow the US recipes, you should purchase a set of measuring spoons that accurately measure ingredients.

Kitchen scales

Professional chefs recommend measuring dry ingredients by weight rather than volume for baking applications to achieve accurate baking results. The density of dry ingredients varies for various reasons, such as compaction.

The best way to guarantee the most accurate way to measure ingredients is to use a kitchen scale (not a measuring cup or a spoon).

But tablespoons to grams conversions are a good way to use when a scale is unavailable or you are a fan of the US measurement system.
