In a regular Major League Baseball season, a team's 26-player roster is its entire active roster from Opening Day through August 31, and during the postseason.

All MLB teams must carry 28 players from September 1 through the end of the regular season.

Clubs are not limited in the number of pitchers they can carry on the 26-man roster. Most usually include between 12 and 13 pitchers, and between 13 and 14 position players (for a total of 26 active players), although the breakdown varies from team to team throughout the season.

What is the minimum number of players teams must have on their roster?

Players on the 26-man roster (or on the Major League Injured List) accumulate Major League service time. All players on the 26-man roster must also be on the 40-man roster. Teams must have a minimum of 25 players on their 26-man roster.

Prior to the 2020 season, a rule was agreed upon that prevents position players from pitching except in certain cases:

  • They are designated as a "Two-Way Player." A player can only qualify for this designation if he accrues at least 20 Major League innings pitched and at least 20 Major League games started as a position player or designated hitter (with at least three plate appearances in each of those games) in the current or prior season.
  • A game goes into extra innings.
  • A player's team is losing or winning by more than six runs when he enters as a pitcher.

Although the two-way player rule has not yet gone into effect, players can earn two-way player status for the 2022 season if they appear in 20 games as pitchers and start 20 games as position players in 2021.

In doubleheaders, clubs may call up one additional player who is on the 40-man roster to serve as the 27th member of the active Major League roster for the day of that doubleheader only.

Currently, there are no rules limiting when a position player may pitch in 2021.
