How Many Towels Does a Household Need?

These days, towels come in all shapes and sizes. And over the years towel manufacturers keep expanding the options! Traditionally, we had the beach towel, dish towel, bath towel, hand towel, and face towel. But now there’s more! How do you decide what you really need?

Special Occasion Towels

Yes, there really is a towel for every stage of life, situation, and occasion. Oversized towels, often called sheet towels are large enough to fully cocoon an adult. Gym and pet towels are self-explanatory. Baby towels are their own category. And decorative towels for Valentine’s Day, Hallowe’en, and St. Patrick’s Day are in a league of their own.

To Towel or Not to Towel 

So, how many towels does a household really need? Unfortunately, there’s no mathematical formula. Assess based on how many people live in your home, how many bathrooms you have, how much storage space is available, and your own personal feelings on the issue.

Towels Are Us 

Have two full sets of the traditional towel collection (beach, bath, hand, face) per family member. Basically, one set in use and the other in the wash. It’s recommended to wash bath towels after 3 uses. So, if you can’t launder mid-week, you may need an additional set per person. Hang towels, letting them dry completely between uses. Damp towels are vulnerable to bacterial growth, which can cause towels to smell musty or sour.

Note: Skip the fabric softener!

Most fabric softeners have oils and other ingredients that make towels less absorbent. If you’re looking for extra fluffiness and buoyancy, add half a cup of baking soda to your wash along with the regular amount of detergent.
