Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob fell in love with Rachel, the younger, and asked to marry her. Laban said he must first work for seven years, tending his future father-in-law's sheep. Jacob did so, and seven years later the wedding was held. However, at the last moment exchanged Rachel for Leah; and said that if Jacob still wanted Rachel, he would have to serve another seven years. Jacob did this too; this time, he got the bride he wanted.Despite not being happily married, Jacob and Leah had several sons including Reuben, who was later to save the life of Rachel's son Joseph. Rachel, however, was unable to have children and asked Jacob to father children on her handmaid, Bilhah, instead.
