This is a common question we hear from our customers.  We say that nowadays, with our increased use of our garages, a quality garage door opener will last 9-10 years.  Some they will last longer, some will be shorter.

If your garage door opener is broken here are some good questions to ask before repairing or buying new.

  • How OFTEN is it used? (once up and once down is a typical cycle, so each time you open and close the door to leave or come home that would be one cycle)

Some problems can be extensive and it makes more sense to go with a whole new opener.  ex: A lightning strike that has fried the circuit board and the photo eyes on an older opener is more than 3/4 of the way to the cost of a new opener installed.

Some problems can be fixed easily and add many more years of life to an opener. ex: The issues is a stripped gear inside the opener.  In this case the gear can be replaced more inexpensively than a new unit and the opener life will be extended many more years.
