Marlo Thomas famously starred and produced "That Girl" in the '60s. She has since been active behind the scenes and launched a charitable initiative for St. Jude Hospital.

Born on November 21, 1937, Marlo Thomas has come a long way since starring in the hit series "That Girl" from the '60s through the '70s.

She also famously starred in "Friends" and the franchise "Free to Be… You and Me." Apart from her acting career, Thomas works behind the scenes as a producer. She is also an author and a social activist on the side.

Growing up, Thomas watched her father, Danny Thomas, in the same line of work as an actor, producer, comedian, and singer. Naturally, his passion for the entertainment industry rubbed off on his daughter.

MARLO THOMAS ON "THAT GIRL"

More than starring in a show, Thomas was a figure in empowering women in a then-male-dominated industry. She was 26 when "That Girl" began in 1965 and became one of the youngest females to produce their own television show. She said:

“Let me tell you; it wasn't easy. I was surrounded by men, and many didn't want to be in a situation where a woman had the power. They didn't want their paychecks signed by a woman either.”

Thomas' journey on the show was filled with criticism and derogatory remarks. Nevertheless, her perseverance and hard work paved the way for the show's success. By the second season, she began hiring more female staff, changing the workplace atmosphere.

Although it has been years since the show launched, Thomas still sometimes looks back at her "That Girl" memories and posts about them on Instagram.

Now much older, Thomas has maintained her youthful glow and fit figure. According to the actress, she gets a facial every week and uses oil on her skin, avoiding harsh chemicals.

Thomas and her family founded the St. Jude Thanks + Giving campaign, targeting sponsorships during the holiday season.

She also maintains a healthy and active lifestyle, squeezing in a workout at least five times a week. For Thomas, age is but a number that merits no hindrance in life. She said:

“People will tell you that you can't do something at your age, but don't listen to them. I believe in motion. Do one thing every day that gets you closer to your dream.”

Beyond her successes, Thomas never forgot to give back to the community through her work at St. Jude Hospital. Thomas is the woman behind several fundraising events and projects to raise awareness of life-saving treatments.

"It was going to have to be a $100 million program, or there was no point in doing it," she said. She has since surpassed her target with the help of many kind hearts.

When not busy with her career and charitable work, Thomas enjoys spending time with her husband of over 41 years, Phil Donahue, with whom she shares five kids.
