She-Hulk: Attorney at Law director Kat Coiro explains the months-long process behind how Marvel made Jennifer Walters' height and muscles look as realistic as possible. The series is the latest installment in Disney+'s ongoing slew of new Marvel shows, and stars Emmy-winning actress Tatiana Maslany as the titular lawyer-turned-hero. The show also features Mark Ruffalo, who's reprising his role as the Hulk/Bruce Banner, along with Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, and Tim Roth in supporting roles.

Nailing a superhero's look is already hard enough for VFX artists, but it becomes even more of a challenge when CGI has to be involved in order to modify an actor's body, skin tone, or facial features for certain roles. Marvel characters like Thanos, Groot, Korg, and Ebony Maw were entirely created with CG, using little to no actual practical effects. This was also the case for Maslany's character in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. At the same time, the show's creators wanted to make Jennifer look as human as possible — while still being a green, 6'7 monster/human hybrid.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Coiro opens up about She-Hulk's design and explains how Marvel made the character's unique appearance look as realistic as possible. A great deal of thought was put into it, and the process involved real life models. Corio's full quote can be read below:

Developing the look of She-Hulk was a months-long process. We discussed strength more than aesthetics, and the big challenge was the Hulk is this monster, he doesn't fit into the human world, he is an outlier. She is a modern woman who goes on dates, works in an office, has friends, and has dinner with her family, so we had to make sure she was human proportions. We had an actress, a stand-in who was 6'7 with us at all times, and we would ask her to walk across the room so we could see what her stride was, and we leaned on her a lot.

In terms of musculature, we wanted to create her own look as opposed to just being a mini version of He-Hulk. We based her on Olympian athletes and Misty Copeland, and these women who stand in incredible power but aren't necessarily bodybuilders.

Jennifer Walters in She-Hulk Attorney at Law

Following the release of the first She-Hulk trailer, there was plenty of discourse surrounding Jennifer's superpowered form. The CGI made for some shocking visuals, leading some to wonder if it was unfinished or poorly rendered. However, as Coiro's comments confirm, a lot of work went into designing She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's leading lady. The decision to use real life models to inform Jennifer's look appears to be a smart one, as it lends some realism to her situation; Jennifer still wishes to go about her life as normal, but how can she do that with a drastically changed appearance? Looking into how real people move can help with that. It also shows how she stands apart from Bruce.

She-Hulk's character design might be divisive amongst fans of the MCU. Regardless of that, it's still interesting to see how Marvel meticulously crafted the character's proportions in order to still look human. This is a fantastical situation that was rendered by real life means. The carefully thought-out process demonstrates just how much effort was applied to this series. It will be interesting to see how She-Hulk: Attorney at Law makes full use of Jennifer's heightened form, especially as she moves farther and farther into the wider MCU.
