Just two days after temperatures in Massachusetts neared 70 degrees, a winter storm swept over the state, dropping more than 9 inches of snow in some communities by the early morning

In snowfall tallies reported to the National Weather Service by 5 a.m., Middlesex County represented the heaviest accumulation in the state. Bedford was the only town in the state to eclipse 9 inches of snow by 5 a.m., though that total was likely to rise in data reported to the weather agency later Friday.

Lexington, Wakefield and Waltham also closely followed with more than 8 inches of accumulation.

The closest verified snow total to Boston, in Chelsea, read 6.8 inches. In Northborough, the nearest to Worcester, the National Weather Service reported 6.6.

Forecasters had expected the storm’s heaviest snow to fall at a rate of 1-2 inches each hour during the morning. Travel Friday morning was especially difficult, with crashes reported across the state. Later in the morning, forecasts indicated the conditions would turn to sleet in areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The conditions were expected to improve in the afternoon, especially closer to the Massachusetts coast, as temperatures rose above freezing, the National Weather Service said. But the agency’s forecasters also warned that a second burst of lighter snow would again slicken the roads in the evening in the central and eastern parts of the state.
