Skunks are capable of five or six sprays in a row because they have two walnut-shaped glands that are refilled as needed to spray from and can alternate between the two. Skunk spray is highly volatile and made up of seven compounds that vaporize immediately upon contact with the air.

Skunks typically warn their intended victims. Their warning signs include foot stamping, hissing, tail raising, arching and puffing. A healthy skunk can spray up to 15 feet, with the greatest accuracy under 10 feet. Baby skunks, called kits, are capable of spraying eight days after they are born. Skunk spray is an eye irritant known to cause burning and temporary blindness.
