RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Meet competing queen Blu Hydrangea

RuPaul's Drag Race has come to the UK for the first time, and has on Thursday shown a whole new group of drag queens hoping to sashay that runway and take the crown. The US versions of the drag queen contest have proven a hit with viewers, with 11 seasons and four All Stars seasons, with returning drag queens.

How old is RuPaul?

RuPaul - real name RuPaul Andre Charles - is 58-years-old and first shot to fame on the nightclub scene before recording the dance/house album Supermodel of the World.

The dance track hit "Supermodel (You Better Work)" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Since 2008, RuPaul has fronted reality TV show RuPaul's Drag Race, with the aim to find "America's next drag superstar".

In 2018, the show became the first show to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program in the same year.

There have been 11 seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and five of the spin-off Drag Race All Stars.

All Stars features previous contestants, who come back competing for a spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

Drag Race has launched the careers of now very high profile drag queens, including Chad Michaels, Bianca Del Rio, Alyssa Edwards and Farrah Moan.

Now for the first time, the series has come to the UK, beginning on Thursday, October 4.

Ru has come to the UK to judge and host the UK iteration of the show alongside long-term friend Michelle Visage.

How much is RuPaul worth?

According to celebritynetworth.com, RuPaul is worth a staggering $16million (£12.97million).

His millions have come from his successful acting, singing and presenting career.

Born November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California RuPaul moved to Atlanta to study performing arts, before relocating to New York City for the drag scene.

RuPaul is known for his indifference toward the gender-specific pronouns used to address him, as stated in his autobiography: "You can call me he. You can call me she.

“You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don't care! Just as long as you call me.”

On BBC Three's RuPaul's Drag Race UK, 10 queens from all over the UK will compete to become the nation’s first drag superstar.

As can be expected from Drag Race, there will be plenty of innuendoes, filthy humour and a whole lot of shade. 

The contestants are: 

• Divina de Campo, 35, from West Yorkshire
• Crystal, 34, from London
• The Vivienne, 27, from Liverpool
• Scaredy Kat, 20, from Wiltshire
• Gothy Kendoll, 21, from Leicester
• Cheryl Hole, 25, from Essex
• Sum Ting Wong, 30, from Birmingham
• Blue Hydrangea, 23, from Belfast
• Baga Chipz, 29, from London
• Vinegar Strokes, 35, from London

RuPaul will be joined by Drag Race regular and current Strictly Come Dancing contestant Michelle Visage, while Alan Carr and Graham Norton will also feature as regular panellists.

There are also a wealth of guest judges who will be starring throughout the series including Maisie Williams, Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall, Geri Horner, Cheryl, Michaela Coel and Andrew Garfield.

The first episode introduced the 10 contestants, before plunging them in at the deep-end for a headless photoshoot.

Posing without a head, and then as just a head, the Queens had to come up with a witty remark for how they had ended up decapitated.

Talking about the differences between the US and UK editions in a BBC, Ru said: “Well the British queens, they do a lot of tongue and cheek.

“And they can be very very cutting but in an intellectual way.

“It’s going to be interesting for audiences around the world to try to decipher some of the lingo.

“That’s been hard for me too. The other day one of the girls said that she had the ‘mouth of a navvy’ – I didn’t know what that was.”
