In order to be a nerd, you must first understand what being a nerd actually means. A nerd is someone intelligent. They’re always learning. Usually nerds are the only people that actively pay attention and participate in class discussion. They are always striving to do well, and be the best they can be. Even when they may feel they are at their best, they still don’t let up on their studies. They continue to develop their overly large brains, and it’s very likely that these nerds are who others will be working for in the future.
Nerds are very individual people. Though many nerds generally act in the same way, they don’t try to be anybody else but themselves, which is a great characteristic to have, especially if you wanna be a nerd. Usually nerds have good manners and are quite polite. They are also very clean and like to keep things neat and orderly, especially their work space. Whether that be their desks at school or their study area at home, it’s clean. They usually keep their rooms clean as well, while also showcasing any fandom merch they have, such as action figures of their favorite characters, like Darth Vader. Maybe they have their limited edition Star Wars Force FX Lightsaber on display, or even framed academic awards decorate their walls.
Being a nerd is not all about the academics, however. While they are very intelligent and take pride in their studies, they are also very obsessive. They are constantly talking about their favorite things in “Nerd Entertainment.” They do know when to stop, though. If they see that someone is not interested in what they are talking about, they will change the subject, or even hand the topic of discussion over to those they are conversing with. Now that you know what it means to be a nerd, it’s time to learn how to be a nerd, like what to do, how to act, and how to dress.
To be a nerd you need to know what to do. First of all, you must constantly be willing to learn, to read, and to widen your vocabulary. Always pay attention in class. I cannot stress this enough. Take as many notes as you can and review them often. Ask questions, even if just for a more thorough explanation than the one given. Watch informational programs, such as the History Channel or the Discovery Channel.
Read, read, read. Read everything. Read informational things, like non-fiction books. Read to get random facts, like off the back of your shampoo bottle or even read the nutrition facts on the back of cereal boxes. Read “nerdy” books, like science-fiction, fantasy, magical realism, and mythology. An example of this would be books such as Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, or some of my personal favorites, the Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series. Make sure to keep your shelves always stocked with books. Get new books at least twice a month, or however often you can afford to do so. Learn to be a speed reader, but make sure you’re still able to fully process and understand the material.
Read dictionaries and thesauruses to widen your vocabulary. Memorize new words, though only use the really brainy words when appropriate, such as when writing a paper, as you really don’t want to be known as a showoff. Use the thesaurus to substitute little words for better ones, such as instead of using the words jumped or typed, use lunged or hammered the keyboard frenziedly.
Now that you’ve got the intellectual bit out of the way, you can now focus on obsessions and becoming an expert. This is where your newfound reading and learning abilities will greatly come in handy. You’ll need to use these new skills in order to become an expert in your interests. You must become more informed than others on these certain topics, and make known that you know these things, but try not to be too obnoxious about it.
When you are playing videogames or computer games, don’t just play them, understand them. Read everything you can about them. Find out who the creators and designers are and learn about them, like how they came up with the idea, or how they envisioned the designing and why they designed them the way they did. Read about each of the characters and discover their background stories.
Indulge yourself into “Nerd Entertainment.” Meet up with your friends and play “nerdy” games such as Dungeons and Dragons. Read comic books. No, don’t just read comic books, collect comic books. Watch nerd shows, like Star Wars and Star Trek. Although there is a feud between the two franchises, that does not mean you cannot like both. Dress up as your favorite characters for movie premiers, even if just for fun. Don’t be afraid to show off all of your interests.
Add nerdy music to your iPods or cellular devices. Bands that most people have never even heard of before are usually a good start. Don’t only listen to mainstream music, listen to the music you actually want to listen to. Buy things like the Star Wars soundtrack CD, or the Harry Potter soundtrack CD. I actually have the soundtrack to the first Harry Potter movie as my ringtone.
This next step is quite possibly the most important part of being a nerd, and that is to actually look the part. You want to stand out, and make it known to those around you that you are, in fact, a nerd, without even having to talk to them. Good places to purchase your new nerdy wardrobe are places such as Wal-Mart and Target (I personally prefer Target).
Buy things like bright polos in plain colors. Some of these colors include, yellow, green, brown, red, etc. Buy button up shirts and wear them even when you don’t need to dress up for anything. Pinstriped button ups are great for any nerd to own. Other shirts to buy include shirts with your favorite characters on them, such as Mario, Sonic, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Yoda, Harry Potter, etc. Be sure to not only wear them when there’s a movie out, though. Wear them all the time to let others know just how much of a nerd you really are.
Accessories are a good idea as well. There are a wide variety of accessories available. Some of these things include suspenders, sweaters, and vests. Always wear a digital watch. Wear boring teacher ties. Of course, you can’t forget the large nerdy glasses. If you have good eyesight, you’re in luck, nerdy glasses are very popular this year and non-prescription glasses are available in stores. Or you could even get a pair of 3D glasses and just pop the lenses out. Make sure what you wear actually reflects your interests and things you actually like.
Congratulations! You’ve leveled up your intelligence by just trying to learn as much as possible. You’ve mastered your obsessions by becoming an expert in “Nerd Entertainment.” Now you look the part, too. Just remember to never try to be anyone else and just be yourself. Unless you can be Batman… then be Batman… because Batman is awesome.
A/N: This was originally written as an essay. The prompt was to write a step by step process on how to do something. This book is not meant to be taken seriously, though if you want to, be all means, go ahead. Thanks for reading
