Broccoli is incredibly healthy and should be part of your diet whether you are vegan or not. Broccoli is a good source of fibre and protein and contains iron, potassium, calcium, selenium and magnesium as well as the vitamins A, C, E, K and a good array of B vitamins including folic acid.

I eat broccoli because I have estrogen dominance which is not good for me. Eating cruciferous vegetables (broccoli being one of them) is a fantastic way to block estrogen production thanks to their high level of phytochemicals. (1)

So what is the best way of eating broccoli? Well, it really depends on your preference. Recently I discovered the perfect way to boil broccoli and I find it the most convenient way of making it quick and easy. It also works really well for when I'm doing meal prep in advance.

How to boil broccoli

To boil broccoli you will need a saucepan full of water and a head of broccoli. The trick to making the perfect boiled broccoli? I will tell you: make the water taste like seawater. As in, put 2 tbsp of sea salt in the water when it's boiling and you have yourself the perfect bath for the broccoli.

If you are wondering for long to boil broccoli, don't worry, you are not the only one. I experimented with my egg timer and it takes 6-8 minutes for the perfect boiled broccoli depending on the size of the florets.

Oh, and before you ask, I still have an egg timer which I use for fun experiments like boiling vegetables for the optimum time. I shall call it my veggie timer.

How to make boiled broccoli taste great

There are a few tricks you can do to make the broccoli taste even better. If you still feel it needs more salt, rather than seasoning the broccoli with sea salt, I recommend adding a dash of soy sauce instead.

I love adding chilli and peppercorn to my broccoli as I feel that chilli kick really complements the taste. If you are missing a bit of acid, add a tbsp of lemon juice.

How to boil broccoli

Ingredients

(USA / Metric)
  • 1 head broccoli
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 1 liter water
  • 1 tsp chili flakes
  • 1 tsp, ground peppercorn
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

    1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
    2. Add the salt and mix until fully dissolved.
    3. Remove the florets from the broccoli and carefully place into the boiling water.
    4. Boil on medium-high heat for 6-8 minutes. Boil it until a fork goes easily through the entire floret.
    5. Remove from the heat and drain. Place in a bowl.
    6. Season with chilli and peppercorn, and lemon juice if using and enjoy*.

Notes

* If you taste the broccoli and feel it still needs some extra salt, add a dash of soy sauce over the florets.
