How to "Break" a Horse.
Canva & Christine Till

You know the bucking broncos you see in the rodeos?

You know what they do to make them buck, don't you?

Those bucking broncos are fake wild horses.

The rodeo buffs just use tools to make the horses buck.

In the old days, that was how horses were broken, so to speak.

Some brave person would just hop on a mustang captured from the wild open planes and ride the horse until it stopped bucking.

Over the years, people learned that, that was not the best way to break a horse.

How old the horse was also depended on how much you could trust it in the end.

The older the horse, the less you can trust it...

Especially the "studs!"...

If the animal has never been ridden before.

I should explain here that a "stud" is a boy horse that has never been gelded.

Need I say more?

Back at my story...

The best way to break a horse...

Actually the word should be "train."

-But the cowboys say, "break."

There is so much terminology that most city folk would not understand, so I will make it as simple as possible.

The best way to "train" a horse is to start while they are young...

Right after the mare has foaled.

The sooner the trainer can get together with the foal, the better.

I used to start right after the foal was born.

The foal/colt gets used to hearing your voice and being stroked.

I would get up rreeaallyy early every morning to work with the colt.

0-dark-30!

The sooner you can get a halter on the colt, the better.

Then you have something you can attach a rope to, that won't harm the animal.

So, for 3 years you work with the horse every day, getting it used to being worked with and handled.

You NEVER get on the horse until it is 3 years old.

I should qualify that statement.

You can ride a 2-yr-old, but only once-in-a-while.

You know the horses you see that have swayed backs?

Well...

That is usually because they were ridden too hard, too young.

You don't want that to happen.

So...

You get the colt used to carrying a bareback pad and wearing a bridle.

The colt learns that the bridle controls its head.

You see, with a horse...

It tends to go in the direction it's head is pointed.

Cool huh!

I used to put one of my children on the bareback pad the horse had on.

There was something to hold on to, on the bareback pad so they wouldn't slide off.

Then I would lead the colt around the corral.

The corral was...

Big...

It had a 12 inch diameter post stuck in the ground, right in the middle of the corral.

That corral was called the horse corral.

We needed that hefty post, just in case the colt tried to bolt.

-But none of my colts ever bolted.

They were so gentle that they would come when called, just like our border collie.

By the way, it helps to have some oats in your pocket...

Tee-Hee!

By the time I sold my colts, they were what is referred to as "green broke" cow ponies.

They had been ridden to round up cattle, so they knew cows, but if someone wanted more training, like a roping pony for calf roping...

Well...

They might have been used a bit, but they needed much more practice.

It's like playing the piano, or any musical instrument for that matter.

It takes a lot of practice to get really good at it.

It's no different with a cow pony.

Come to think of it...

It's no different with business either!

All too often I see people start up a new business...

It doesn't matter whether it is a traditional business or a network marketing business.

They both require a looooot of hard work to build.

One has to be consistent and patient for a very long time.

I see so many people take online marketing courses and spend a ton of money on them, only to quit a couple of months in, because they didn't make their millions yet.

Just like breaking horses...

It takes 3 years before you get the horse at least green broke and ready for sale as a cow pony.

Just like becoming a professional musician...

It takes many years to get reaaallly good.

You have to practice every day.

-And not just 15 minutes...

At least 2 hours every day!

The same goes with breaking horses.

So where is your business going?

Are you about ready to give up?

How many hours a day are you putting into all the steps included in building your business?

I hope it's more that 15 minutes a day.

Fifteen minutes just won't cut it.

There can be no taking the day off to go fishing...

At least in the early years...

Yup!

Years...

Of growing your business.

Remember that when you quit on your business, you are really quitting on yourself and your family, if you have one.

Most people start a business because they need extra income that is totally passive and requires little effort once you get it set up.

But...

There is always a BUT!

You always make way more money if you work on your business a little every day.
