Published Aug 31, 2021 + FollowThe technology industry is known to be a field with lucrative salaries and skills shortages. Fortunately for job seekers, many tech companies are trying to build onramps into the industry through free or low-cost training programs, according to the latest edition of #GetHired. For example, Google Career Certificates prepare people for jobs in a range of tech specialties, including IT support and UX design. The Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start program also trains people for entry-level jobs in cloud computing. In many cases, people use these and similar programs to pivot into jobs with higher salaries and better work-life balance.

4yHave you thought about moving into the tech industry? Why or why not? My career was spent at traditional media companies before I joined LinkedIn. I never thought I could make the leap into tech because I couldn’t code or do anything too advanced on a computer. Fortunately, I soon found out that there is a wide range of needs within the tech industry. Now, many tech giants are trying to help people pivot into the field. I take a look at a couple of these programs in the latest edition of #GetHired. #OpenToWork #Skills #Hiring

“I WANT TO GET INTO TECH” With some frequency people reach out to me and ask how they can break into the tech industry. I realize it’s not necessarily the easiest shift, but if there were EVER a time where you could do it, it’s in 2021. Go GET experience rather than asking a company to let you have it. Start something…who cares if it fails. Volunteer for a non profit and learn on the job. Watch 10,000 hours of YouTube and become an expert. Write a blog a day. Additionally, build relationships with people in tech. Don’t ask for jobs. Ask how you can help. Make nice comments on people’s LinkedIn posts. Remember their names. Be kind all the time. Those two combined approaches, with some persistence and putting your goal out into the universe, will go a long way.

Would you consider a career in the tech industry? A skill shortage is leading some large companies to create training programs for people with little to no tech experience to make a pivot. The latest edition of #GetHired looks at two programs from Google and Amazon that help people secure entry-level jobs in the tech industry. The programs, which often help match graduates with employers, can open doors to higher salaries, better work environments and better work-life balances. Read all about it in the latest edition. #Jobs #TechJobs #JobSearch ✍🏻 : Andrew Seaman

Excited to launch the #AWS re/Start programme, this is part of Amazon's commitment to help 29 million people hone their technical skills for free. The re/Start 12-week program does not require candidates to have a background in technology, and will prepare them with all essential skills of cloud computing. #aws #india #skills #cloud #education https://lnkd.in/dcASHKkU

Have you tried any free tech career training programs from companies like Google or Amazon? What about training from other companies? Many tech companies have increased their commitments to train people for careers in engineering, project management and more. Have you considered taking part in one of these programs? What did you decide and why? Did you take part in one of these programs? What was your experience? We’ll be talking about these opportunities in an upcoming edition of #GetHired! #OpenToWork #Training #CareersInTech 📷 : Getty Images

You always bring such valuable questions Andrew! I have expanded my education with certificates, LI classes, YouTube, etc. I was considering some from Facebook, but then I am doubting if I should continue to do so. The reason is simple: would I be considered for a position? Due to my age, companies won’t even give me a chance. And that has been quite frustrating. Any advice? Unfortunately, I am not the only one in this position.

Early on in my career, I did take Microsoft's data science professional program that was taught via edX. It was super helpful and well designed and later on I even incorporated certain techniques from that program in my own course development process with SkildLabs

“What’s the most difficult obstacle you had to overcome to get here?” I was asked in a final #interview. In that moment, my heart was touched by a teenage memory. “To be honest, it may seem like a small obstacle, but convincing my parents higher education is a good idea - was my biggest challenge”, I responded. “University means you would need to move to a city. It is also for people who can afford it. And we cannot”, my parents would argue. In 2013, I confirmed a full sponsorship and attended New York University Abu Dhabi and later worked and studied in the USA, UAE, Spain, Argentina and Australia. In 2019, to enhance my knowledge in marketing, I completed free #certifications by Google. Today, I would like to announce that last month I was contracted by Google working in London’s YouTube Marketing Team. While this content is similar to the “I’m humbled to announce” posts, after some reflection I decided to keep it. The more stories we put out there for #firstgeneration professionals, the more people out there will know that with learning opportunities - we can follow our dreams. It indeed took a village of support. Thank you everyone who has guided me in this journey. For everyone in #London: looking forward to meeting and e-meeting professionals in the city!
