How to Capture a Monster
Here are the steps to catching a monster in Monster Hunter World:
- Make sure you've crafted some Tranq Bombs and a few traps when starting your hunt - combine Trap Tools + Thunderbugs or Nets to make traps, and Parashrooms + Sleep Herbs to make Tranq Bombs.
- Locate the monster you want to trap and lay into it. You'll want to damage it enough to bring it near death but not kill it - you'll know you've sufficiently wounded it once it starts limping away in retreat and/or a skull appears next to its icon on the mini-map.
- Lay down one of the traps in its path, or lay down the trap beneath it once it goes to sleep at its den.
Once it's trapped, throw multiple Tranq Bombs in its face to make it fall asleep. The quest will then end, or you'll see a notification on the right if you were on an Expedition.
Capture Vs. Kill
First things first, what's the difference between capturing a monster and killing it?
- Capturing a monster can be faster, since you can end the quest as soon as it starts limping.
- You will get more rewards, but you won't get to carve its body.
- Capturing a monster counts as both a "capture" and a "hunt." Sounds weird - but if you have both Hunt and Capture bounties you need to fill, capturing will fulfill both!
It has been debated, based on the Hunter's Notes, if certain items like Gems are only obtainable by carving. However, capturing a monster can provide rewards that are only listed in the carves category, and to a greater amount at that. So, capturing is always better!
The bonus rewards given by Investigations can be anything! If you hunt a monster enough times, you will be able to see the carve rewards and quest rewards in your Hunter's Notes.
