Changing your username in Minecraft is a bit more complicated than you'd expect. Not only does the process vary by platform, but so does the associated cost. If you've outgrown your old identity, here's how to change your Minecraft username on all platforms.

Change Your Username With a Mojang or Microsoft Account

If you happen to be playing a version of Minecraft that requires a Mojang or Microsoft Account, changing your username is simple. Here's what you need to do:

  • Navigate to the official Minecraft website.
  • Log in and load your Profile page.
  • Click Change next to your profile name.

This works for all Microsoft accounts. If you have an old Mojang account, you'll need to first convert it to a Microsoft account. Once your profile has been updated, you'll see your new username in Minecraft.

According to Mojang:

"When playing Minecraft: Java Edition you will see your Username in-game and not your Gamertag. The only time you will see your Minecraft Username is in-game and in your Minecraft account settings. You will still be able to view and change your Minecraft: Java Edition Username as usual on www.minecraft.net. Just navigate to your profile information."

Note: You can only change your username once every 30 days.

Change Your Username Associated With a Gamertag

While changing your Minecraft username is a simple process for those with a Microsoft account, things become a bit more complex if you're playing with a Gamertag. Minecraft players with a Gamertag will, unfortunately, need to go through a different process to change their username – and it most likely won't be free. Here's how it works:

  • In order to change your Gamertag, navigate to the official Xbox website.
  • Log in and load your profile.
  • Navigate to the Change Gamertag page.
  • Check the availability and confirm your change.

Updating your Gamertag is free for the first time but will cost a fee for a subsequent change (the exact amount varies by region). Because of this, you'll need to be careful about picking a new Minecraft username – otherwise, you might be stuck paying for another name change.
