How To Charge Surface Slim Pen 2

Microsoft released the Surface Slim Pen 2 along with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio, introducing haptic feedback when writing on both those devices. The good news is that the Slim Pen 2 is backwards compatible with older Surface devices too. The bad news is that charging it isn’t as straight forward in those cases. Here are the different ways to charge Surface Slim Pen 2.

Surface Pro X & Surface Pro 8 Signature Type Cover

Simply place the pen in the pen slot of the Surface Pro X or Surface Pro 8 Signature Type cover and it will start charging. The pen will magnetically realign itself if needed.

Surface Laptop Studio

Place the pen under the front lip of the Surface Laptop Studio, right under the touchpad, and it will magnetically attach and start charging.

Surface Duo 2 Pen Cover

Attach the Pen Cover to your Surface Duo 2 and place the Slim Pen 2 over it. Full guide here.

Surface Slim Pen Charger

Place the Slim Pen 2 in the charger and connect it to a power source with a USB-C cable.

It’s important to keep in mind that the Pen 2 doesn’t come with a charger in the box. So even though the Pen 2 is advertised to work with devices like the Surface Laptop 4 and the Surface Pro 7+ on the box, you’ll still be left with no way to charge the pen. For some reason, Microsoft decided not to include the charger in the box, like it did with the Slim Pen 1.

My advice is to stick with the Surface Slim Pen 1 or the regular Surface Pen if you need to ink on your older Surface devices. You won’t be able to take advantage of the haptic feedback anyways, which is limited to the Surface Laptop Studio and the Surface Pro 8, and it won’t attach magnetically to them either.
